True Vintage Kennedy Era late ’50’s – early ’60’s Dressy Spring Coat

Imagine wearing this gorgeous and iconic coat to a special party or event. The color is an emerald green, less bluish than in the photo. Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations or to cover your LBD at the next cocktail gathering.

Glossy fabric with a jacquard pattern. It’s probably a synthetic – maybe acetate. The coat is lined with a more bluish material – more turquoise. Open front, 3/4 length sleeves and this iconic wide collar with a decorative bow – all style features that define the very early 1960’s. Made by a recognizable label, this coat was part of a trend at the time – much like the fine suede coats with mink collars that are of a similar design. I own several and have shown them in the past.

Always fun to see clues repeat themselves in different garments made during the same time frame, and also from decade to decade as fashion trends repeat. More formal and dressy frocks to come – stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Practical and Perfect Mid-century Coat for your Party Nights (and an antique echo . . . . .)

Mid-century velveteen vs. Victorian silk and beads. I was thrilled and surprised to find each of these. Couldn’t be a bigger contrast in two dressy outer-garments!

The velveteen coat is both very simple and beautifully designed. I love the practical velveteen in an all-weather fabric plus the fabric-covered big buttons and foldover collar. The straight cut and roomy sleeves make it easy to wear no matter what your outfit might be underneath. It’s one of my very favorite coats.

Imagine my surprise when I encountered this antique evening cape in a jumble sale! Absolutely falling apart, but it was very pretty in it’s day. Silk exterior and lining with a beaded stand collar. Definitely worth collecting for the archives.

Both these wraps could have been perfect whenever sleuthing incognito at an evening event. Smashing but very inconspicuous on a dark and stormy night . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE OUTERWEAR? FUR REAL OR FAUX? WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT . . . . . . . . .

Last night I was out and about to a theater production and couldn’t reasonably drive a two block distance. Walking was the only choice, which I love, but IT WAS SO COLD!!! My warmest outerwear option, which kept me toasty and comfy, was my post-war beaver jacket from Canada. 75 years old and it’s still snuggly and beautiful. I grieve for the precious animals who (yes, WHO) were sacrificed for vanity and retail profit back in the day and will NEVER buy modern fur products. I advocate for animal rights but also celebrate those lives and gifts by preserving and enjoying elegant fashions from the past for as long as they will last.

I own many gorgeous fur and faux fur pieces made decades ago, before protective legislation and individual conscience stopped some of the fur trade and promoted humane practices. Above is one example, on the left, of an older fur jacket dyed to mimic mink. I cannot identify the fur – could be muskrat. Before the end of WWII, furs considered to be less fine were often processed this way. Other examples, such as the one on the right, are fakes – popular in the 1950’s and beyond. Some have been very convincing even since the 1950’s. Many of those made today look and even feel very authentic. The look is fun and elegant, in a vintage way, plus, as I proved last night, very practical.

Faux fur and secondhand true vintage furs are the best, the ONLY humane and progressive choice. I prefer those from the 1960’s and before. The remaining fur trade is still a blot on humanity, so we must be vigilant in our boycotting of this active market but I don’t see the enjoyment of historical fashions as being hypocritical. HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!! HERE’S YOUR TRUE VINTAGE PARTY DRESS . . . . . . ..

IMG_1198Stella’s all over the “wearin’-o-the-green” for St. Paddy’s Day celebrations.  All that’s missing are some emerald green stiletto-heel pumps, a rhinestone necklace and a little IMG_1246evening bag.  I had to resurrect this evening coat because, though it doesn’t look so in the photo, it is the most brilliant emerald green you can imagine!

Both from late 1950’s – early 1960’s era.  Go forth and have fun!!!

True Vintage Early 1960s Dressy Coat Over Your St. Patrick’s Day Frock

True Vintage Early 1960s Evening Coat
I showed this coat a few weeks ago, but what time could be more appropriate for a re-run . . . . . .

Imagine yourself in this, over a gorgeous green dress, on your way to a swanky cocktail party or the church dance.  This beauty is by Lilli Rubin, in emerald rayon blend, lined in turquoise blue!  The collar, neckline bow and elbow-length sleeves are hallmark features of that era, as well as the color.  The fabric is a jacquard with flowers embroidered all over.
What a great surprise it was to find this!!  It starts up all kinds of fantasies about elegant dinners, evenings at the theater . . . . . you just never know . . . .

The temperatures are hovering Spring-like in some places, but I know that these wonderful garments can still be worn in many cities. One reason I still like cold weather is for the opportunity to wear lovely wool clothing.

The coat has a fabulous collar and stand-out sparkley rhinestone buttons, in my favorite red. I like to wear it in the evening.  They would both be from the 1950’s – early 1960’s.

The lovely woven cape came from San Francisco and was, undoubtedly, tailor-made with a silk lining bordered by about 6 inches of hand-done embroidery. It has arm slits for convenience, so I can easily substitute it for a coat or throw it quickly over anything else I might be wearing.

In an out-of-the-way place, this beauty was very patiently waiting to be discovered.  So Downton Abbey, if that’s your cup of tea.  But, I think she wanted to be in films.

Well, she is certainly a star in my closet. There’s no one else like her. The dramatic wrap of her collar and the artistic flare of her sleeves (not to mention that figure!) . . . .

I found a real gem, and in almost perfect condition.  Black wool to mid-calf or ankles. Silky lining. What a way to make an entrance . . . . … .. … .

Here’s another view of the green evening coat I like to show for St. Patrick’s Day – this time with a more versatile and elegant style from the same decade.  These coats are from the 1950’s/1960’s. Lighter-weight fabrics and fresh colors make them suitable for mild evenings.

So fun, with a little sparkle, the one on left is more subtle with just a bit of pattern in the glossy pale yellow material.  Both have easy, elegant styling but the coat on the right is in-your-face BRIGHT with a silky emerald floral jacquard and huge collar.  VERY much a sign of it’s time.

It’s so important for me to have alternative disguises available . . . . . . . . . . . .

It’s still cool enough to wear them for dressy evenings and I love to top my party-wear with these old fur-trimmed lovelies.  The brown one is from the Forties and is of a light-weight wool with dyed rabbit trim.  The black coat is lined rayon crepe with mink at the cuffs – perfect over a little black dress.

This time of year, with Valentine’s behind us, St. Pat’s day and Easter approaching is full of special events going on and good opportunities to dress up a bit.  Never to be missed!  Go forth and enjoy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

MY MOST QUIRKY, OLDEST EVENING COATS - FROM THE 1930'S & 1940'S

These black crepe coats are so fun and individual – I really love wearing them!  While not being fully antique, they are earlier examples from the ’30’s & ’40’s.  One may be from the early ’50’s . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . .

On the far left, the characteristic feature of this one are the shoulder tails, which are folded across the front in this picture.  It also has a deep slit in the back hem – almost a long jacket, rather than a coat.

In the center is a rather plain, tailored black crepe coat, but you can see the scalloped hems on the sleeves.  Perfectly elegant and discreet.

On the right, a plain, one – button front crepe coat with ivory lining, deep side slits and mink cuffs at the elbows.  Hardly inconspicuous . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
