A PRACTICAL BUT CUTE MID-CENTURY COTTON FROCK FOR MAKING THE DAILY RUN TO THE MARKET . .. . . . . . . . .

In the same color(?) palette as yesterday’s dress, this one seems more down-to-earth but still has important elements of style.  It was probably custom-tailored, too.  The buttons are clear plastic with a Deco design.  Like the other it needs a belt, but that’s not a big challenge.

Although knock-your-socks-off styles and fabrics send me over the moon, I never pass up a simple true vintage frock that is well-made.  The material, notions and tailoring are always interesting.  Plus, they usually look really good on, because the cuts tend to be so superior.

Giselle is feeling right at home and we’ll be getting a bit more exotic tomorrow . . … . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE 1950s & '60s MEN'S NECKTIES

Here’s a collection of neckties that span from the early ’50’s to the late ’60’s.  Brand names include Wembley and others (which I’ve forgotten at the moment).  Some are of silk, some of rayon blend and some of polyester.

Although the widths vary a lot from decade to decade, I don’t think that I would let that keep me from wearing the one I wanted to if I were a man.  They can all look sharp and interesting or fun.

It’s not difficult to find these now.  Once in a while I check for them.  They even make nice belts for women’s clothing sometimes, and women did wear them as ties, too, in 1967 when the British Carnaby Street fashions were really in.  You can wear a skinny one for an Annie Hall look, or whatever.

When it comes to wearing vintage fashion, anything goes . . . . . . .

This is so cute! I think it is from the late ’60’s, but might also be from the early ’70’s. It’s a ’30’s revival style with a flounce at the hem.  Lovely, drapey rayon, cut on the bias.  It’s missing the original belt, but otherwise is perfect.  Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun . . . . . . . . . .

Not my color, so this one was sold but I just couldn’t resist!   Wish I’d had Stella at the time, for the photo, since Madge couldn’t possibly get into it.

Another treasure from the 1960’s.  Sorry my camera/laptop is playing tricks on me again – can’t edit the photo.

This pretty Spring dress was custom-tailored with lots of nice features.  Love the Mod bell sleeves – I’ve run across several of these in the past 2 years, all of a sudden.  It’s fully lined, with raglan sleeves and an invisible zipper center back.

The seamstress knew her stuff and did a very good job. Although it’s plain, it’s very well-made.  The first thing she did right was selecting the fabric – a good quality polyester and/or acetate.  The print and colors are gorgeous – SO SIXTIES!!!

Sorry that this isn’t my color palette (makes me look jaundiced) but I’m sleuthing for true vintage fashion – not only things I can wear.  So, that didn’t stop me.  Never does . . . . . . . . . . . .

Can you believe this?  It’s so awful it just cracks me up!!

Thank goodness things have changed so much that this is just funny.  I couldn’t possibly pass it up!

I just love these old novelty linens – aprons, tablecloths, napkins, etc.  Some of them are really cute but it’s hard to believe that things like this one were “normal” stuff that most people bought.

I’ve got more “new” true vintage mid-century finds to show you, but couldn’t resist posting this one first . . . . . . . . .

PURE CLASSIC! VINTAGE DAY DRESS IN FLORAL COTTON

Right on the heels of that daring red frock shown yesterday came this traditional, custom-tailored every-day dress in a beautiful cotton print.  Again, I can’t say exactly how old it is but it was home-sewn in a classic, mid-century style.  The fabric is gorgeous.

Although it’s another perfect fit for me, the style is very plain so I think I’d cinch the waist with a belt to enhance the fit and add a pert little scarf or pearls at the neckline, depending on my mood.  Yes, that would be VERY cliche’ ’50’s but – so what? – also a VERY pretty look. Unless I wanted to go completely kitchy for the fun of it, I’d leave off the hat/gloves -handbag/shoes sets.

Anyway, this dress really makes me hanker for Spring!  Can’t wait to see what turns up next . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN KITCHEN FUN

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWow again.  Tons of fun!  This one didn’t cause the mystery and the “a-ha” moments that the  dress did, but it was just an immediate Back to the Future experience!!

The moment I spied these crazy cats, I was transported to the early 1960’s.  There is a cartoon show from that time called The Jetsons, still available to watch online.  I can see Mrs. Jetson wearing this in the kitchen or, maybe, their pet cat looked like this.  It just made me laugh.  And, guess what else I found – the elusive but ever-present safety pin inside.  Seems like no mid-century homemaker wanted to be caught without one at hand.

Lots of clues here – no mystery about getting it right. . . . . . . . I take back what I said yesterday – it is just as fun to get knocked over the head with all the information as it is to solve a mystery, just not the same fun.  But, hey – fun is fun, right?  Sounds like a silly argument to me . . . . . . . . . . . ..

From the West and Down East – a vacationer’s mid-century mementos of a fun holiday!

Fun cotton linens for the kitchen and dining table were big favorites during the 1950’s and 1960’s.  Many a traveler picked them up as souvenirs, too.  I just love the funky and funny prints!

As always, these items tell a story.  You could have practically driven through California without a map after buying this muslin tablecloth. Although the apron doesn’t have any words, the cute illustrations of pilgrims/immigrants in their native dress and the border designs contain a lot of information about the communities or cultures that they came from.

Also, if you can do a close-up look, you’ll see a small vintage safety pin stuck in the waistband.  I always like to leave things like this in place because that’s just how the cook or housekeeper wore it during her daily routine.

These linens will last forever if they’re looked after well – remove stains quickly and wash gently.  I’ll bet that I can channel some very interesting vibrations with these in my kitchen . . . . . . . . . . . . .

ANOTHER DISCOVERY – TRUE VINTAGE BLOUSE BY LADY MANHATTAN

What a fabulous maker’s label!  I just love old Lady Manhattan blouses.  This one is from the  early 1970’s or, possibly, the late 1960’s.  The first thing that caught my eye was the print – then the styling.  There are a few more clues that are the real truth revealing it’s era.

Although this one is casual, it still demonstrates the the classic elegance that was typical of this brand.  Lady Manhattan always made lovely women’s blouses and was still  in the marketplace doing women’s clothing into the Eighties, but I  prefer their mid-century creations.  Too bad Madge isn’t here to model – it’s just about her size.

What a treat!  I come across these only once in a while, so I’m really thrilled.  But then,  everything I find is an uncommon treasure, so it’s rare or more rare and I get the thrill bumps a lot.
