FABULOUS FINDS FROM THE FORTIES - TRUE VINTAGE DRESSING GOWNS

Wonderful dressing gowns from the 1940’s, or maybe even the 1930’s. These are made of rayon with great classic style.

The peachy pink one allows you to sweep into the room with a grand entrance. It has padded shoulders and a little bit of an elongated hem in back – an actual “train”!  The flowered one is a little more a’la Blanche Dubois. (A Streetcar Named Desire (play by Tennessee Williams, set in New Orleans – watch it; great movie starring Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando; a classic).  Flowered and sweet – very feminine and demure.

Gowns like these are more or less a morning version of the men’s smoking robe. Perfect to wear while enjoying your first cafe’ au lait of the day. . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ..

A SHEER, BLACK TRUE VINTAGE (AS ALWAYS) EARLY 1950’S FROCK WITH RHINESTONE BUTTONS

A SHEER, BLACK TRUE VINTAGE (AS ALWAYS) 1950'S FROCK WITH RHINESTONE BUTTONS

This dress is very special. I’m sorry that I don’t yet have a photo of Stella wearing it, or a personal photographer to take pictures of me wearing it. It is VERY sheer, as you can see, and requires a slip underneath.

The little cap sleeves and dainty collar, plus the belted waist and full skirt make a very flattering and feminine impression. The small buttons down the front, which are purely decorative, have big clear rhinestones at their centers. A fabric-covered buckle belt finishes off the waistline.

This dress closes with a zipper at the left waist. It is a real wiggler to get your shoulders into. If I were any larger, it’d be a no-go! As it is, it works and the skirt swirls around because the fabric is so light, ending right at or slightly below my knees.

You could wear this dress to a party or…

A VERY FETCHING SHEER SHIRTWAIST DRESS FROM THE 1950'S

This true vintage dress is a favorite of mine to wear because it has a very attractive fit. The material is sheer and light – it follows the body nicely over a silky slip.

I’ve found several dresses from the ’50’s made of very sheer fabric. In this floral design, it’s airy and floats and plays with the light coming through.

In a classic shirtwaist style, with rhinestone-centered buttons and fabric-covered belt. Extremely pretty. Can’t wait to photograph it on Stella!

TRUE VINTAGE '50'S DRESS BY RUBY'S OF MIAMI

Here’s a REAL favorite of mine – straight from the ’50’s and Miami, Florida, no less! I really feel an attitude when I put this on.

It’s a heavy cotton or cotton blend material. There is almost a brassiere sewn into the front of the bodice, so no need to fuss about the right undergarments.

On top of that, it even has sewn-in bloomers below! That must be because the front of the skirt has a wrap-around effect. Very interesting! That’s why Madge couldn’t model this one, either, and it will be a little full-figured for Stella, but we’ll try.

I wonder who made the garments for some of these small shops that had their own labels – did they have seamstresses or did they buy small lots from wholesalers?
Anybody know anything about this?

It’s another mystery that has been perplexing me for some time . .. . …

TRUE VINTAGE 1950'S PARTY DRESS - REMINDS ME OF GRACE KELLY

This one was a FABulous surprise find! I always have my eyes open and my antennae up, but this blew me away!

A sheer layer over plain liner, and fitted drop-waist hourglass shape – the colors are for Fall but work beautifully in Spring and Summer for someone with the right coloring. It reminds me of a dress that Grace Kelly wore in the Alfred Hitchcock movie, Rear Window. Just a fabulous film – highly recommended.

The style is a bit different and the colors are, too. The cris-cross neckline is something not usually seen. I love it – it’s so fun to find unusual items.

Watch that old movie if you can. It’s a great one and the clothing is wonderful. I have at least one other dress that was, in fact, modeled on one of the frocks that Grace wore in Rear Window. I’ll show it later on…
