MORE BEAUTIFUL TRUE VINTAGE MID-CENTURY BED JACKETS

Just look at the gorgeous trimming details on these luxurious early mid-century items. Such a pleasure to wear!  Can’t you imagine relaxing in one of these some time during the holidays?  Heaven!

Nothing could be more feminine or comfy than these heavy nylon bed jackets; for just a little extra warmth while reading a book or the paper, or enjoying a leisurely coffee or breakfast in bed.

Whenever I find these, I cannot resist.  A lady can never have too many . . .

TRUE VINTAGE EIGHTIES DOES FORTIES WIDE LEG PANTS

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve coveted and cherished the desire for more of these for quite some time – and here they are!  The color is not fushia, as in the photo, but a nice lipstick red and they fall to the ankle on me, as they should.

I just love how these “pants” (hard for me to think of them that way)  looked on Katherine Hepburn and Rita Hayworth back in the Forties.  The slim waists and hip-hugging cut is so flattering and the easy legs are so comfortable.

What a pleasure to discover them, and in my favorite RED.  I’m really on a roll with that!  Must be the spirit of the Holidays . . . . . . . . . . .

BLACK CREPE, PADDED SHOULDER DRESSY FROCK – TRUE VINTAGE EIGHTIES DOES FORTIES

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I just love the satin cummerbund on this demure but dressy style from the early Eighties.  It will look smashing on Madge, with her curvy figure.

Knee-length and sedate, this dress is nevertheless a knock-out.  Black crepe is always classic and perfect.  Black satin touches always ramp it up a notch for dressy occasions and certainly make this one appropriate for the holidays.

It’s also unusual to find a dress like this with long sleeves and that’s a real plus for certain occasions and for cold weather.  Modern dressy black dresses, unless they’re cheaply made, frumpy or uber-conservative, never seem to have them and I’m always pleased with this option in a quality frock.

Leave it to true vintage garments to provide all the best that you could want from clothing, if you’re savvy and sneaky enough to find them . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE ROBES AND DRESSING GOWNS FROM THE LATE 1930’S – 1940’S

TRUE VINTAGE ROBES AND DRESSING GOWNS FROM THE LATE 1930'S - 1940'S

We’ve done a little film noir leisure dressing for the men, so here are 3 of my very favorite women’s things of the same era.  The fabulous ’30’s robe with shoulder pads and tassels, the cute little wartime rayon dressing gown and the glam  ’40’s rayon dressing gown.  Hollywood movie star all over!

Imagine Veronica Lake or Joan Crawford sweeping into the room. Deanna Durbin would look sweet in that dressing gown.

I like to recline in one of these while sipping a cognac and reviewing the latest assignment. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I know Madge doesn’t look much like your granddad, but she was handy. These are just about my favorite men’s robes – with the black satin accents. Not easy to find now!

This is such a classic style that it’s difficult to be sure what decade it’s from. The pattern is helpful and the type of fabric, as well as other clues. The satin trim is rare.

Almost every old movie has scenes with men at home, wearing something like this. Especially if the man is enjoying his leisure hours, it really takes me back to classic cinema. Beats a track suit any day.

The thing about this style is that it is also deadly attractive on women. There’s something very fun and sexy about wearing your partner’s clothing once in a while – from shirts and PJs to robes, sweaters and jackets. Other stuff doesn’t usually work too well…

TRUE VINTAGE EIGHTIES DOES FORTIES FROCK

IMG_1787You know that I go mostly for the 1960’s and before, but once in a while I get seduced by some true vintage retro from the Seventies or Eighties. Well, it happened again a couple of days ago.

This is a nicely-made and designed dress by Betsy’s Things (no relation to Betsey Johnson), a brand I’ve liked before.  It has several style features that I look for.  And, it’s a beautiful fit on me!

Looks pretty nice with my “new” Forties shoes, too.  What could be better? . . . . . . . . . . .

RARE FIND! WWII – POST-WAR PEEP-TOE PUMPS WITH CUBAN HEELS

IMG_1788Thrill, thrill, thrill – I love finding these guys!!  Bless your hearts, 1940’s women.  You took such good care of your shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!

With leather soles, so that they can be repaired as-needed forever.  Visible wear of the uppers and insoles is practically non-existent.

These were more-or-less everyday shoes for a town gal who would wear them in the house and on errands.  They could pass nicely for modest dress-up occasions, too.  (Weddings, funerals, a dinner date).

Ever practical and always aware of the deprivations of the Depression and war, war-time and post-war era ladies got in touch with their courage and capability.  It was only after the soothing and reassurance of the Fifties economic boom that they allowed themselves to be slipped back into their “place” as model housewives and mothers who became trapped in their new, modern homes.

The rest is history, which we’ve all contended with since.  But, I am proud to step into this woman’s shoes . . . . . . . . . ..

TRUE VINTAGE FUR HAT BONANZA – A TOQUE IN CURLY LAMB

This was another one worth nabbing, because though I have similar curly lamb hats in black and marled grey, I didn’t have a luscious chocolate brown like this one.

It’s got a beautiful, architectural design that makes me think of the 1940’s.  It’s true vintage but is so classic that I can’t date it exactly.  Again, in near-perfect condition.

Curly lamb seems to be one of the furs that is easiest to replicate in imitation form, so go for it if you can’t find a real one made in the 1960’s or before.  Leave anything modern on the racks or, preferably, on the animals’ backs.

TRUE VINTAGE ’70’S DOES ’40’S SUNDRESS FROM WEST GERMANY

IMG_1759This fabulous 100% cotton dress was made in West Germany, obviously   before 1989 and maybe many years before that.  Yes, it’s another new find that’s out-of-season right now in North America and most of Europe, but I love, love, love this anyway and couldn’t wait to show it!

Forties style is so wonderful.  I love the cut-in shoulders that give a halter neckline feel without the bare upper back.  It’s one of my favorite styles and I’ve been so fortunate lately to find some true vintage Forties, too. Shirtwaist ease is always great – red and white polka dots – a nipped-in waist and midi hemline ………… Fashion heaven!!

Plus, it’s got that true vintage West German quality of workmanship and materials that make it a really good investment, no matter what.  It’s in perfect condition and will continue to last.  What could be better? . . . . . .

ANOTHER TRUE VINTAGE 1940’S WAR-TIME DAY DRESS

IMG_1730I love, love, love this one!  Custom-tailored (probably at home), it’s got ’40’s design details and, of course, shoulder pads.  Stella will absolutely flip!!!!!

The fabric is a kind of poly-type synthetic in a flower print.  Signs are that it was made some time in the midst of WWII.  Just a fun and practical frock to wear while she was carrying on with the day-to-day.

Best of all, it fits . . . . . . . .
