TRUE VINTAGE 1960'S - '70'S POLYESTER SHIRTS

Seventies shirts are always fun – polyester holds colors so vibrantly and the ’60’s & ’70’s were a time for great prints and designs.  Some of the graphics were kind of ugly, too, but that’s part of what makes them so fun to wear.  And some are really cute!

They’re good in cooler weather, but not for summer!  Polyester was one of the “miracle fabrics” in some ways, but it has its limitations.

These are recent finds which I have added to my everyday closet. Not haute couture by any means, but I enjoy these easy wear/easy care items. However, no matter how “ordinary”, never mistreat your vintage treasures!   I still care for them as if they were gold . . . . . . . . . . . . .

3 favorite shirts of mine. Many take-offs have been made and are in the marketplace now, but these are  better.  I always say that, but it’s true!

Shirt #1 is from the late ’70’s. It’s a retro style in a really nice drapey rayon. I love the parrot and the vibrant colors, plus the way it fits. It has little shoulder pads and a flattering cut.  The stripes are reminiscent of vintage bowling shirts.

Shirt #2 has lost its label, but because of the styling I’ll guess it’s ’70’s but it might be ’50’s. It’s a
Western-style shirt with pearlized snap closures and yokes front and back. In gingham, of course!

Blouse #3 is by Ship’n’Shore – that old vintage stand-by maker of lovely cotton blouses. This one is printed with stylized scenes from Europe. Because of the design, I’m also sure that it was made in the late ’60s or early ’70’s.

Love shirts like these – not really old, but with distinctive style and fabric and very wearable every day.

I guess it’s just the high neckline. Lots of dresses from the early ’70’s (except the hippy/prairie/boho styles that were popular then) have a very innocent, girlish look about them. Have you seen the Prom dresses from that time? Watch the movie Footloose.

This one is unremarkable in its tailoring, but it was just that ’70’s cache’ that made me bring it home. I must admit, it is a very classic style and can be done beautifully if it’s with quality materials and exceptional workmanship. But this one just takes us on a daydream journey back 40 years.

It’s fun to watch old movies from that time (or That ’70s Show, I guess), just to see how awful some of the clothing was. Uh, oh – I’m going to get myself into some big trouble here.

But seriously, the dance scene from Footloose is a good tutorial on ’70’s Prom dresses and a real feel-good sequence, too, if you like dancing. And this is the general style line that both Grace Kelly and Kate Middleton wore as their wedding gowns – but you have to close your eyes to imagine it . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
