Rare find – 1950’s or early 1960’s Katz housecoat

While this may not seem exciting to you, it is to me and I’ll tell you why. Katz was in business for almost 100 years, since the late 1890’s, and started off making underwear then branched in several directions until closing in the 1990’s. I have found only 2 items made by the Katz company over all my many investigations, which seems illogical. So, I consider a garment made by Katz to be a rare find. So much for the pedigree – let’s see what else is very cool . . . . .

Another thing about this brand is that, though they seem to have been mid- to low-priced items, the quality of construction is exceptional. All the finishing is very well done and the decoration is made to last. The buttons and lace are of excellent quality. Although this coat is at least 60 years old, it is clean and untorn. We could chalk these two points up to the higher standards of quality usually seen in true vintage garments and the better care of their wardrobes that our mothers and grandmothers took. However, this is still not true in every case. The only things I need to attend to are re-stitching one bit of seam and replacing a button, which I’m sure I already have a good match for.

The design is extremely basic so might be considered boring, but I’ll be keeping this coat because it’s the only one of its type that I’ve seen which is just a mid-thigh length. Very unusual. So convenient and cool. Definitely worth picking up. I also unearthed an accessory item from the same era and with similar credentials. Stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE FALL FOOTWEAR – A PAIR OF SHOES THAT REMIND ME OF AUDREY

A PAIR OF TRUE VINTAGE SHOES THAT REMIND ME OF AUDREY

The actress Audrey Hepburn, I’ve read, favored cute little low-heeled shoes like these in the 1950’s and 1960’s when she was making many movies in America and Europe.  Though this pair are not quite that old, they’re of a style that has been around for decades and were made by a company that used to sell good-quality shoes and purses.

Nothing beats the classics and these are pure – Fall colors, back to school, practical casual fashion and comfort.  Fashion items this versatile are a super investment, while looking so unique!  Leather uppers with strong synthetic soles, they’ll last forever if they are looked after.  Ahh, the beauty of a true vintage quality wardrobe . . . . ..

I wear them with a skirt and sweater, a jumper dress, slacks or even a simple suit.  They’re a good choice for a day of shopping or sight-seeing or a long sleuthing assignment . . . .

TWO MORE TRUE VINTAGE LBDs – THIS TIME FROM THE 1950’S

DSC00699

Little Black Dresses keep coming my way.  Love this one, with interesting tailoring details.  Since these don’t show up in the photo, I will explain while you use your imagination.

Short, short sleeves are very flattering and the front of the bodice is sheer to show off the lace or trim on a beautiful black slip from that era.  There is a fabric tassel at the waist, to be tied into a bow.  From the hip to near the hemline, horizontal pleats add interest to the pencil skirt.  Very elegant and becoming and –

NEW FIND! 1960’S PUMPS BY JOYCE

img_3855.jpg

Aren’t these the sweetest things!  Just love them.  Nothing much is cuter than 1960’s shoes.  Very Audrey Hepburn.

The Joyce company made nice sportswear during the 1960’s – worth a pick-up if you find anything true vintage by that label.  As always, be wary of cheaper latecomers . . . . . . . . .

LET’S BE ELEGANT – LUNCH AT SARDI’S ANYONE?

LET'S BE ELEGANT - LUNCH AT SARDI'S ANYONE?

True vintage from the 1950’s, this one was not made for a lunch date at the local diner.  We’re in to Spring-weight fabric here, but black and white is always season-less (or is it dark navy? It’s close . . . .)

Just look at the beautiful drape on the bodice, and the sweet cap sleeves.  The jacket, again, has 3/4 sleeves to show off the elegant gloves and fine bracelet or watch.

Another of those outstanding ensembles which can take you almost anywhere . .. . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE 1950’S JACQUARD COCKTAIL BLOUSE

THIS WILL BE PERFECT FOR UP-COMING PARTIES . . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE 1950'S JACQUARD COCKTAIL BLOUSE

Here’s a lovely, oh-so-flattering jacquard blouse for cocktails, dinner, dancing and parties. It looks superb with a long black skirt or black cigarette pants.

Notice the little bows at the waist. It also buttons up the back (I LOVE that feature of so many ’50’s blouses) with 5/8″ covered buttons. Very swank.

The fun thing about 50’s separates like this is that they were dressed up or down, since rock and roll, rhythm and blues and, later, cocktail parties became such a rage – on top of the more formal and traditional occasions that were always part of the social scene.

As usual, the cut and tailoring of this piece is outstanding. The fabric is quite nice, too. Just the right thing for a woman of intrigue to have in her closet, no? . . .
