GORGEOUS MID-CENTURY LINGERIE FINDS – LOVE THESE 1950’S PIECES!

I’m always on the look-out for beautiful lingerie from the 1950’s, 1940’s, 1930’s and 1920’s, especially.  This time I was not disappointed!

Take a look at the lovely lace and the special detail on the half-slip.  These items do show some signs of wear, but they are not important and will serve me for decades more.  As always, gentle hand-washing of true vintage lingerie pieces is the best practice.

LOVELY MID-CENTURY LINGERIE FULL SLIP – A FAVORITE TAILORING DECORATION ON THIS ONE

Although I have so many pretty true vintage lingerie slips, when I find one this nice I always pick it up.  It will be just perfect under the dress I found a couple of days ago (look back on the blog) – right length and color.  The best thing about this one, though, is the design.

I love it when lace is sandwiched between layers of sheer fabric.  So subtle and beautiful, but also protected so it will wear well.  The picture doesn’t do it justice – you really have to see these garments up close to appreciate them.

Light and pretty – fortunately they don’t take up much space to store . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ..

MORE ABUNDANCE – LOVELY LINGERIE WITH SURPRISING COLORS, DETAILS AND TAILORING

I have found lots of lingerie slips lately but haven’t published them because, though beautiful, they were not the most interesting or fine examples of vintage underclothes.  In this case, you should see these pretty features.

Pretty pastels are always a favorite.  Bright pastels, red and black are major favorites but I don’t think I have ever seen a mid-century nylon slip in royal purple!!!!!!!!!  Maybe the previous owner dyed it to match a favorite dress?. . . . . . . Could have been, (nylon takes dye really well) but NO – the maker’s tag is attached as originally, with no evidence of exposure to fabric dye.

In the second close-up photo of the pale pink half-slip shows a beautiful applied design on the center front.  I LOVE these, and don’t find them often anymore.  Details done on lingerie up to the early 1960’s was often absolutely gorgeous.

Finally, on the oldest piece in this photo I’ve pictured the seaming detail that carefully shapes the bodice.  Most items sold today are almost a one-size-fits-all construction, within a broad category such as S, M or L and don’t fit really well.  This sacrifices a lot of their purpose (after all, these are supposed to be FOUNDATION GARMENTS which used to be designed to give support to and accentuate the fit of the clothing worn on top).

So, that’s a little session about the neat features of true vintage lingerie slips.  I’m always on the look-out for them . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

MIXING IT UP A BIT – HERE’S A NEW FIND THAT WOULD GO WONDERFULLY UNDER THE RED DRESS OF A FEW DAYS AGO . . . .

A gorgeous 1950’s nylon full slip by Dorsay.  Such beautiful lingerie!  The workmanship and materials can’t be rivaled by modern versions.

Just look at the tiny pleats on the bodice and embroidery at the hem – plus lace, etc. and wider straps.  the heavy fee of the nylon fabric is a delight, too.  I’m sad that it’s too big for me, but I have many lovely others and, I’m sure, more on the way . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

NEW TO ME – GORGEOUS 1940’S – 1950’S LINGERIE SLIP

I just had a windfall of finding a whole armful of lovely pastel full slips from the ’50’s and early ’60’s, but I’m going to show you this one first, which I found a few days ago.  It’s older, and longer, and more elaborately-styled in a design which I rarely find.

This slip is from the era when lingerie was made as if it were the main attraction of your whole outfit.  Forget what you’re wearing on top of it – the beautiful underthings is what’s really going on.  Look at those stunning crystal pleats on the bodice and the flounce at the hemline.

A slip that is so well-styled, carefully-made and of a wonderful, heavy nylon or rayon (or cotton, for summer) that it could stand alone as a dress is the kind of slip that our grandmothers wore every day.  Some were fancier than others, but even the more day-to-day items were elegant.

How about some pretty lingerie that makes the decision easy! No more concerns about indiscreet gaps or getting your undies in a twist . .. ….. . . ..

Back in the day when every type of clothing came in well-made and lovely versions that weren’t expensive, women had options like these to wear under those trendy and faddish styles that might not be in fashion next year.  I was so glad to find that pair which I showed a few days ago that was just – a – little – bit – longer . . . . . . . . . .

Even though culottes and hot-pants went by the way-side pretty quickly, there’s still a definite place for lingerie pieces like these in my wardrobe and sometimes they are SO practical! And, the heavy, silky nylon and beautiful decoration are always a pleasure . .. . . . . . . . . .

Pretty citrus – color lingerie in luscious ’50’s nylon, with exquisite decoration.  Rare colors!  Believe it or not, I just found a similar one in pale yellow the other day . . . . . . . . . .

The temperatures keep going up and down, but how can we doubt that Summer is coming if we wear these?

As always, luscious fabric and gorgeous trimmings.  The seaming on the bodices is unusual on the two yellow examples and probably deserves a Special Investigation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Conjures thoughts of Spring, in spite of the winter storms – this, too, shall pass . . . . . . . ..

Spring IS just around the corner. Especially once we get past March, it’s the time that Spring and Summer fashion traditionally is brought out in force and warm weather clothing appears on the store racks. The way the weather has been changing, it can be different tomorrow!

Before the weather does get hot, beautiful lingerie is a must under Spring clothing when the colors get lighter and the fabrics do, too.  Nothing modern compares well to the heavy nylon and artistic, high-quality decoration of slips made before the early 1960’s.

So, whether you’re into pastel dresses or not, wearing one of these can make you think of sunny skies and keep a secret smile in your heart. . . . . . . . . . . . .

SPECIAL-PURPOSE LINGERIE SLIP – TRUE VINTAGE 1950’S – MADE IN BRITAIN

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhat a surprise to find such an interesting, and USEFUL, slip to add to my collection!  Never seen one like this before, but I’ve certainly been in need of one.  It was made to wear with dresses like the one I showed yesterday – sheer all over.  I just happen to have a black one from the Fifties that needs an undergarment just like this one.

This slip (in my size, by the way . . .) is made almost like a dress.  It has a back zipper, a kick pleat in the skirt, and an opaque woven rayon skirt.  But, it’s undoubtedly a lingerie item.

The bodice is of sheer lace, fitted and with adjustable straps as you would expect with any slip.  Several features tell me that it is a 1950’s garment – not a modern copy-cat.

For the dress shown yesterday, in beige with a gold design, you would of course want a different color slip with no pattern – but the same features of fit and coverage would be just right. These discoveries are so much fun!  This time I can really call myself an “undercover agent” . . . . .

ANOTHER AUSSIE FIND – TRUE VINTAGE 1950’S ILLUSION PARTY DRESS

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACouldn’t wait to get this home, where Madge or Stella (my mannequin models) could show it properly – this sheer, custom-tailored frock is a great example of a popular style of the 1950’s.  It’s a dressy style, with metallic gold leaves printed on beige illusion fabric.  I think that Grace Kelly wore a similar dress in the movie “High Society” from the early 1950’s.

This example is a pull-over design, with no zipper or buttons.  Cowl neckline in front and a dropped waist, with below-the-knee hemline.

Of course, a silky sheath or plain, tailored slip in a matching tone has to be worn underneath.  Tomorrow I’ll show you ANOTHER find that is a perfect example of a lingerie garment made exactly for this purpose.  The fascinating discoveries just never end . . . .
