LET’S EXTEND OUR VISIT TO THE WARTIME 1940’S – WITH A SWING COAT

This is a real-deal wartime garment, illustrating some of the rationing which was taking place in the early to mid-1940’s. Shorter length, fabric that is a mystery rather than pure wool and no metal used for buttons or buckles. In fact, no buttons or buckles at all. Made by a Garment Workers Union without a brand name, this coat was made to satisfy the needs and tastes of women while citizens of the U.S. and others across the world were all making do with restricted availability of materials needed to support the war effort.

Garment designers and workers did their tailoring best with great success. As always, our ability to rise to the occasion with ingenuity produced a garment that served the need in iconic style. What you don’t see in these photos is some interesting seaming on the shoulders and a beautiful silky lining. NEW FIND FOR THE GUYS – 1950’S LAKELAND WISCONSIN SWEATER & SUEDE JACKET!

I’m over-the-moon with this one!!  Last year I found a wonderful sweater made like this, with soft, fine suede – but this one is a full jacket WITH A ZIP-OUT PILE LINING! – and braided leather buttons.  Just LOVE the quality and style of jackets made between 1940 and 1960.  What a fabulous mid-century vibe.

It was another magic moment for the Magicvintagespy because this coat is in virtually perfect condition.  Just like stepping into a Happy Days episode or going Back to the Future. What fun!  More to come . . . . . . . stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

IMG_1728 IMG_1729Can you imagine – the FIRST thing I discovered was this gorgeous set!!  And, it all got better from here:

Pretty rayon blend sheath dress with a matching coat.  Look at the collar on that coat!  The trim and lining are of printed silk.  Both dress and coat are completely lined.  There is no label remaining, so this set might have been custom-tailored by an expert.

On top of that, it’s in perfect condition.  A special frock ensemble, well cared for.  Made for Spring or early Autumn – cool summers, too.

Well, full-moon periods are like this.  Phenomenal things materialize.  This one hit my eye like a big pizza pie – and I was off and running . . . . . . . .

PRETTY 1960’S SPRING INTO SUMMER DRESS ENSEMBLES OUR GRANDMOTHERS KNIT AT HOME

IMG_1482Ready for a big project?  These patterns from a true vintage McCall’s needlework magazine from 1962 are just what you need!

Aren’t they elegant and very lovely?  A handmade ensemble like this would be totally unique today.

When everyone tended to dress up a little more and women almost always wore dresses  or skirts, it was easy to glide from more casual activities to something more dressy without having to change an entire outfit.  Add a matching jacket or coat,  maybe change your shoes and accessories, comb your hair and touch up make-up et voila’ . . . . . . . . ..

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!! HERE’S YOUR TRUE VINTAGE PARTY DRESS . . . . . . ..

IMG_1198Stella’s all over the “wearin’-o-the-green” for St. Paddy’s Day celebrations.  All that’s missing are some emerald green stiletto-heel pumps, a rhinestone necklace and a little IMG_1246evening bag.  I had to resurrect this evening coat because, though it doesn’t look so in the photo, it is the most brilliant emerald green you can imagine!

Both from late 1950’s – early 1960’s era.  Go forth and have fun!!!

I showed this coat a few weeks ago, but what time could be more appropriate for a re-run . . . . . .

Imagine yourself in this, over a gorgeous green dress, on your way to a swanky cocktail party or the church dance.  This beauty is by Lilli Rubin, in emerald rayon blend, lined in turquoise blue!  The collar, neckline bow and elbow-length sleeves are hallmark features of that era, as well as the color.  The fabric is a jacquard with flowers embroidered all over.
What a great surprise it was to find this!!  It starts up all kinds of fantasies about elegant dinners, evenings at the theater . . . . . you just never know . . . .

I’m appreciating the crisp transitional temperatures and rain right now, even though it seems cold!
I know many people are experiencing this all over the world.  Makes me want to show my wonderful capes, which are great for this type of weather.  Want to make an entrance at the St. Patrick’s party?  Wear the cape on the right with the green side turned out.

From the 1960’s, one is in always-wonderful-red kind-of traditional/military style and the other a blue & green reversible paisley pattern with an open front and decorative string tie.

Like a bright hat, either of these makes a big impression on the street.  Both are wool, so provide warmth while the loose fit keeps it from being too hot and can be worn over just about anything.  Just right!

SCRUMPTIOUS NEW FIND! MID-CENTURY SUEDE JACKET

IMG_1070I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE jackets like this.  It’s beautifully hand-tailored in the softest suede, with horn buttons.  They used to make such gorgeous outerwear coats and jackets.

This one is like new!!!  Oh, I am so blessed (not to mention pretty darn good at this!) . . . . .
