MORE TREASURE – PRETTY MID-CENTURY (1960’S & 1950’S) NIGHTGOWNS

IMG_3869

Whenever I encounter beautiful examples of sleepwear lingerie from this era, I always bring them home.  Although I love the pj’s, knee-length gowns are another favorite. While made of the same type of wonderful nylon, the gowns usually have more elaborate and prettier decoration.

The Fifties saw mostly pastel pieces similar to the one on right, though sometimes in red or black.  During the Sixties bright colors were popular, as on the left.  This was kind of backward to how lingerie slips were made – go figure.

Anyway, there was no debate or stopping-to-think-about-it for me, but always nice to know all about it . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE 1950’S SPECIALTY LINGERIE SLIP – MADE IN BRITAIN, FOUND IN AUSTRALIA

IMG_1076IMG_1077     This undergarment is so unusual – it could be worn as a dress itself, like many beautiful mid-century slips could be – but not because of exquisite decoration.  It  has extremely rare construction and is also made, at least in part, of a rare fabric – Bri-nylon, a nylon blend made in Britain.

The top is sheer lace, but the bottom is substantial and opaque; made to act almost like a girdle under a slinky sheath dress.  Notice the back metal zipper that lets the wearer into the tight-fitting skirt.

A slip like this would be absolutely essential under many a wiggle-dress from back in the day.  I’m so glad to have one now!

TRUE VINTAGE 1940’S SILK DRESS & 1950’S SHEER BLOUSES WITH PRETTY SKIRTS & LINGERIE SLIPS

IMG_0993 IMG_0994Really pretty outfits, a dress and skirts/blouses.  I have combined more modern vintage skirts with sheer true vintage 1950’s blouses.  The pink leather peep-toe slingback pumps are ’80’s or early ’90’s does ’40’s – Nina brand. (’90’s – I have a hard time calling that “vintage” , though some people do) since I love the old classics much more.  The slips are true vintage and the silk dress is authentic 1940’s or 1930’s, too.IMG_0995FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS WAS A SURPRISE FIND! LEMON YELLOW TRUE VINTAGE 1950’S LINGERIE NYLON HALF-SLIP

NEW FIND! LEMON YELLOW TRUE VINTAGE 1950'S LINGERIE NYLON HALF-SLIP

You know I have SO much lovely true vintage lingerie and a ton of 1950’s slips, but I still go giddy when I find another one.  They’re just so beautiful with their lace, applique, ribbons, sumptuous fabric and elegant tailoring.

This one is by Warner’s in a lemon ice color.  Just the right length for a bottom-of-the-knee dress or skirt, or a midi.

I’m so glad that we are not locked into a certain hem length for months (or years) like women were in the past.  No more dread of appearing unfashionable or out-of-step.

Ha!  Can hardly imagine it . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

UNUSUAL FIND! TRUE VINTAGE 1960’S LADIES’ NYLON LINGERIE PAJAMA SET

UNUSUAL FIND! TRUE VINTAGE 1960'S LADIES' NYLON LINGERIE PAJAMA SET

It is SO unusual to find a pair of true vintage pajamas with both pieces intact, let alone dating before the 1970’s!  I had to use a little of my special sleuthing know-how to do it, but they were hiding in plain sight.

This pair is by Shadow/Line and is made of fine vintage nylon, with netting, lace and embroidery at the neckline and on the front pocket.  In a beautiful deep coral pink, which is also an unusual color to find.  Yes, there are always fun surprises around the corner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

TODAY IT’S A TRUE VINTAGE 1940’S – EARLY 1950’S NYLON LADIES’ ROBE

TODAY IT'S A TRUE VINTAGE 1940'S - EARLY 1950'S NYLON LADIES' ROBE

I’ve had lots of fun finding “new” things! I love the fit and drape of this robe. It fits the neckline so nicely and the hem swirls a bit in back.

As soon as I put it on, I could tell that it was an older item by the fit as well as the tailoring details and the fabric. That’s one of the most fun things about discovering, because the clues lead you on to lots of “aha” moments.

And, there’s no more favorite expression than that for a true vintage sleuth . . . . . . .

NEW TO ME – GORGEOUS 1940’S – 1950’S LINGERIE SLIP

IMG_3442

I just had a windfall of finding a whole armful of lovely pastel full slips from the ’50’s and early ’60’s, but I’m going to show you this one first, which I found a few days ago.  It’s older, and longer, and more elaborately-styled in a design which I rarely find.

This slip is from the era when lingerie was made as if it were the main attraction of your whole outfit.  Forget what you’re wearing on top of it – the beautiful underthings is what’s really going on.  Look at those stunning crystal pleats on the bodice and the flounce at the hemline.

A slip that is so well-styled, carefully-made and of a wonderful, heavy nylon or rayon (or cotton, for summer) that it could stand alone as a dress is the kind of slip that our grandmothers wore every day.  Some were fancier than others, but even the more day-to-day items were elegant.

More pretties to come, and more to discover.  Stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

JUST PICKED UP THIS LITTLE TRUE VINTAGE PEIGNOIR ON MY RECENT TRAVELS . . . . . . . . .

IMG_3465

While it’s nothing special in terms of its pedigree, I love the styling of this pretty robe and always am delighted with rhinestone buttons!  Sheer and lovely – just right for Blanche Dubois – and, on top of being in “perfect” condition, it’s REALLY PERFECT over a black true vintage gown I own which had no matching peignoir!!

So, go figure. . . . . . . . serendipity always happens for

BEAUTIFUL 1940’S – 1950’S NYLON NIGHTGOWNS

IMG_3007BEAUTIFUL 1940'S - 1950'S NYLON NIGHTGOWN

These gorgeous lingerie gowns were another surprise find – always so much fun! The shoulder detail is what really makes them stand out – the way the straps are joined in the front. They just don’t make ’em like this anymore.

The sheer panels and the gathers are also lovely, as well as the cloud-soft feel of the nylon fabric.

Sigh – to die for . . . . . . .

WHILE WE’RE INTO UNDERWEAR – JUST FOUND: PERFECT SPECIAL-DUTY MID-CENTURY LINGERIE!

I have never had a long-line bra, and lusted after the perfect one for years.  It’s one of those things that has to fit just right or it’s a mess.  Well, not only is this one in my size, but it does just that (fit perfectly)!  Now I’ll be free to debauche in God-only-knows what shameless costumes.

No, probably not.  But, a strapless dress or that plunging neckline . . . . . .YES!!  and, feeling like a ’50’s vixen all the while.

Next, the slip that is not a slip.  It is a “skirt liner” that’s worn like a slip, but is tailored like a skirt with a back zipper and kick pleat and is made of more substantial fabric. Great example of another garment that will come in handy under just the right skirt-cumstances.  Forgive me.

Finally, a peachy split slip to be worn under gaucho pants or any kind of split skirt.  I have a long pair of slacks liners, but sometimes they just won’t do.  So, there!  In one fell swoop, I discovered these ’50’s to ’70’s pieces that will sometimes be indispensable and just right with clothing from those decades.  It pays.  You just never know . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
