TWO-PIECE KNIT MAD MEN DRESS FROM THE LATE '50'S/EARLY '60'S

For dinner or after-work cocktails, this little number would fill the bill. Pair it with some matching blue pumps and you’d really be swank.

Simple as can be, but with the neckline decoration and the little vents at the waist, it’s very stylish. And, like a sheath dress, the fit is classic and really flattering.

If you are a DIYer, this style is very simple to sew.  I have another very similar in lightweight soft green wool – made by the grandmother of a friend in mid-century, as a 3-season dressy day dress.

Just the thing to have in your closet for that unexpected invitation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE LESLIE FAY ORIGINAL JACKET FROM THE LATE 1940'S - 1950'S - A FAVORITE!!

I just love this jacket! Look at the details – the red lining, black velveteen collar, bracelet – length sleeves, shoulder pads, big black buttons and – surprise! – the body is a check of white and true navy blue!

It looks so good with a solid true navy or black skirt or slacks, or over a plain dress. Just stylish with good lines, fit and overall quality – like the best!  A perfect 3-season garment.

Sleuthing tip:  Be careful about Leslie Fay garments when searching for true vintage, because the company is still in business (as are some others from that era) and the item you’re looking at might have been made this year!

MORE TRUE VINTAGE BLOUSES FROM THE '50'S AND '60'S Today I’m showing some of my day – to – day blouses in colors, prints and solids. . . . . . hues that can go year-round.  From left to right, they go from the early 1950’s to mid – 1960’s.

The dressier one, which is also sheer and lightweight, is on the left. Rhinestone buttons give it a girly touch. The way we do things now, it can be worn with a casual outfit but it would still look lovely under a suit or with a pretty skirt, as it would have been worn back in the day.

This cotton selection (the 3 on the right) has longer sleeves than my hottest weather group, but they’re so classic that they can really be worn any time and add fun to my wardrobe.  The classic print on the center one and 3/4 sleeves are style elements that are favorites of…

TRUE VINTAGE WWII – ERA FROCK – ANOTHER FABULOUS FIND!!

IMG_1542Here’s the lovely dress that I showed you on a hanger when I first found it, a couple of months ago.  Now the statuesque Stella gives it a proper display.  Black rayon crepe, again, with pink underlining at the shoulders and black lace overlay.  Dressy, but not formal.

This  frock is dated from the late 1930’s to early 1940’s.  So many pretty touches and the strong shoulders that I like, but not with regular shoulder pads.  As with many older pieces, the bodice is constructed in hand-tailored detail inside to shape it and make a foundation for the decorative layers on top.  A wide ruffle across from shoulder to shoulder, and a narrower one at the hem.

So wonderful to find the faux flowers that are pinned at the neck still present and in such good condition!  They’re old and a little rumpled, but that’s all.  The opening on the left side-seam that helps you get into the dress is closed with buttons rather than a zipper.

All the clues in plain sight.  Just another day in the life of . . . . . . . .

A SHEER, BLACK TRUE VINTAGE (AS ALWAYS) EARLY 1950’S FROCK WITH RHINESTONE BUTTONS

SEXY, SHEER SUMMER DRESS – TRUE VINTAGE FROM THE EARLY 1950’S . . . . .

A SHEER, BLACK TRUE VINTAGE (AS ALWAYS) 1950'S FROCK WITH RHINESTONE BUTTONS

This dress is very special. I’m sorry that I don’t yet have a photo of Stella wearing it, or a personal photographer to take pictures of me wearing it. It is VERY sheer, as you can see, and requires a slip underneath.

The little cap sleeves and dainty collar, plus the belted waist and full skirt make a very flattering and feminine impression. The small buttons down the front, which are purely decorative, have big clear rhinestones at their centers. A fabric-covered buckle belt finishes off the waistline.

This dress closes with a zipper at the left waist. It is a real wiggler to get your shoulders into. If I were any larger, it’d be a no-go! As it is, it works and the skirt swirls around because the fabric is so light, ending right at or slightly below my knees.

You could wear this dress to a party or…
