MORE FINDS! 3 KNIT DRESSES FROM THE MAD, MOD 1960’S

I love these!  They’re so typical of the day-dresses from the early to mid-Sixties that said “Fall is Here”, mostly for professional women.  Anyone who wanted to look nicely tailored, but casual, wore styles like these.

So, I’ve seen lots of them on TV but not in person.  It’s great fun to find this blast from the past that probably belonged to the same woman.  Wonder what her everyday story was about . . . . . . . . . . . . ..

TRUE VINTAGE 1960’S MARY JANE’S – CUTEST ALL-LEATHER MOD CARNABY STREET SHOES

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     Look what I found in Canada!  Celebrity brand Mary Janes with leather soles and chunky heels.

These would be from the mid to late 1960’s.  Like some others I’ve shown before, one shoe has the maker’s name stamped on the footbed and the other has the name of the local store that sold them.  This was a common practice in the Forties, Fifties and Sixties when small, privately-owned shoe stores were in every town and city and many of them had a good relationship with the suppliers of the special brands they sold.

Probably moderately priced when they were originally sold, but quality, quality, quality all the way . . . .

VERY UNUSUAL DISCOVERY: TRUE VINTAGE 1940’S WOMEN’S(?) SLACKS BY THE HAGGAR COMPANY!!!

VERY UNUSUAL DISCOVERY: TRUE VINTAGE 1940'S WOMEN'S SLACKS!!!

What a surprise it was to run across these!  Finding true vintage slacks is rare – especially any that are this old.  Finding nice slacks, with their belt, hardly worn and a perfect fit is a miracle!!!  Just like they were made for ME (maybe they were . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .) though I feel just like Katherine Hepburn . . . .

These are a small plaid weave in grey and ivory. They are “man-tailored” with a zip fly, front and back pockets. But, the fit is NOT man-tailored!

Notice the straight legs and cuffs. The other pairs of ’40’s pants I own have a very long crotch or very wide legs.  They’re lovely fun, but I like the sexy fit of these.   I suppose it’s possible that they were men’s pants, though they button in the wrong direction.  But, I’ve got hips for sure, and a small waist so I would doubt it.  Anyway, who cares!

I treasure mid-century blouses that are perfect with my true vintage skirts and slacks.  Always on the lookout for just the right jacket and, you just never know . . . . . . . . . . . . .

True Vintage Belted Day-Dress from the late !940's for Fall

Another of my favorites. It took me a little while to fall in love with this one, but I did.   Some of the buttons and the belt needed replacing, but fortunately I had in my collection some fun copper-colored ones that matched!  They spark up the overall gray color of the fabric and add interest.

Actually, the fabric isn’t gray.  It’s maybe the tiniest black & white check known to mankind.  Had to get out my magnifying glass to examine the fabric closely. The weave is very interesting and looks like a cross between a stripe and a houndstooth check, in a beautiful rayon (?) with a wonderful drape – So luscious that it makes me wish I were a fabric expert to understand it better.  In warm lighting, it gives a kind of nut-brown effect that seems just right for going into Fall.

As usual, there’s a metal…

TRUE VINTAGE WORKING GIRL DRESS FROM 1960 – APPLE FOR THE TEACHER?

IMG_1504I love it when I can date a true vintage find to the exact year!  Although this frock is not hugely distinctive, it’s a great example of a specific vintage genre.  I’ve got another to show in a couple of days.

.     This lightweight knit dress (yes, ladies, you’ll need a slip!!) is breezy and practical, with an all-over apple print. Despite the long sleeves,  it’s sheer enough to comfortable in a cool office and would be perfect in a couple of months for the first day of school.  Very professional.

The style is so classic that it’s almost invisible; that is also a basis of elegance.  Skinny self-tie belts were really popular in the early sixties, and I’ve seen them mostly on styles that are classic and streamlined.  Day-wear from that time seems to have verged away from some of the fussy, though beautiful, detailed tailoring of the Forties & Fifties.

So, think old re-runs of popular sit-coms of that year and what the female leads were wearing though, at that time, they’d be mostly housewives . . . . . . .
