TRUE VINTAGE MID-1960’S SILK SHANTUNG SHEATH – CLASSIC LITTLE BLACK DRESS

IMG_1664Basic, basic, basic – but nothing is more elegant.  Needless to say, I was thrilled to discover it!

Bateau neckline with an easy shape and kick pleat. Long metal zipper in back.  It can be accessorized in so many ways and will look unique on women with slightly different body shapes.  And, the fabric . . . . . . . .

This silk shantung sheath was tailored for tall juniors and Stella barely qualifies at 5’7”, so the fit would be transformed on a taller girl with correct measurements for a true vintage 12/13 size.

Styles like this endure with ease over many decades and become increasingly difficult to find in the same quality as the years go on.  Sometimes a little change in the hemline is called for, but otherwise it’ll stand on its own forever, with delicate care.

ANOTHER TRUE VINTAGE MID-CENTURY WONDER FOR A DRESSY EVENING – PURE SILK SHEATH

IMG_1657Compared to yesterday’s beauty, this frock is a cut above in several ways.  Pure silk fabric and complex draping and ruching make a truly stand-out bombshell dress design.

From a small designer label, it would have been made in the late 1950’s to very early 1960’s.  Couldn’t be more sensational with it’s attention-getting cut and flattering fit.

Just right for strutting your inner Sexy Siren.  This is a Marilyn Monroe dress if ever there was one. . . . . . . . .

A PRETTY TRUE VINTAGE SHORT-SLEEVED SHEATH DRESS FROM THE 1960'S - CUSTOM TAILORED

This pretty dress is in an unusual shade of blue that echoes the hue of yesterday’s shirt.  A combo that I always love and don’t come across often enough – blue and brown. It was custom – made, with hand-done crewel embroidery on the front.

The easy sheath style is always perfect, and the short sleeves make it less summery.  I love their fluttery cut and the brown lining peeking out.  The main material is a sort of hop-sacking weave, which was very popular in the late ’60’s. Just the right weight for going into Fall.

Back metal zipper and fully lined in a lightweight cotton blend material. Flattering but simple.  Madge fills it out beautifully, no?

Looks just right for a teacher, or, or, or . . . . . . . . .
I wonder who . . . . . . . . . . . …

A SAUCY LITTLE FIFTIES DRESS (AND THE LINGERIE SLIP I WEAR!)

I just love this dress, with the big bow and button in front. The colors are so sunny and really stand out!

It’s made of a heavy cotton that doesn’t show through, but I like to wear a comfy nylon slip under and this lovely orange one from the 1950’s just fills the bill. I really like wearing lingerie that matches my outfit and the fifties were famous for their bright undergarment colors (especially in slips).

With a fabric-covered belt it fits nicely and looks cute as well as lady-like. Just depends on which way you want to go . . . . . . . . . . . .

ONE OF MY FAVORITE (I SAY THAT A LOT!) DRESSES FROM THE 1970'S, BY COS COB

I love wearing this dress and it’s special because it belonged to a family member. Cos Cob was a well-known maker of women’s sportswear back in the day, similar to Bobbie Brooks, but I don’t think that the company was as old.

This dress is cotton in a wonderful print, with a long pointed collar and nice, easy shape. Thank goodness it isn’t culottes, which were popular then. They look convenient, but they’re really not.

A sleeveless shift is great for casual summer wear and always looks smart if you accessorize properly. That’s the key to transforming most ensembles and women used to do that so well. The Europeans, I must say, are better at it than Americans now.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
