WHAT A WONDERFUL ENSEMBLE FIND! LOVE THIS!!!!!

Found these two pieces separately, but aren’t they perfect together?  The pencil skirt is a true vintage 1950’s design by the vintage California Lorrie & Deb label.  It fits like a dream – looks as good on me as it does on Stella.

Later, I came across this blouse.  It is a more modern retro design (might still be true vintage by the definition of 30 years old or more) and I fell in love, also knowing that it would likely look great with my skirt.

Well, guess what – how wonderful can you get?  I was over the moon when I tried them on together and will remain so every time I wear them.  So, chalk up another one for serendipity and the Magicvintagespy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I CREATED A VERY COOL VINTAGE SKIRT

Look what I did to my dress!   You had seen this late 1960’s wool dress before, and I loved the red knit top of it, BUT,  the years had not been kind before it came to me and some moths had had a banquet.  Just couldn’t live with the little holes here and there, and no good way to fix them.

SO – why not snip it off at the waist and fashion a dirndl/pencil skirt instead?  So easy!  All I did was finish (by hand) around the waist with a piece of grosgrain ribbon, sew a few hooks and eyes in the placket left where the zipper used to be et voila’!  Just for extra fun, I threaded a black tie belt through the crochet so that it ties off in back.  Wouldn’t have had to, but it allows me to fit the waist a little more snugly and adds a cute touch.

Brainstorm!  Maybe I can wear it with that neat green sweater found recently – and black boots – must check it out . . . . .. … .. . . . . . . . . . .

RECENT FIND – MID-CENTURY PJ’S WITH BOTH ORIGINAL PIECES!!!!!!!!!

IMG_3854A lot of you might not get too excited about these, but I just love, love, love true vintage slinky nylon pajamas!  Nothing else feels like them.  They are so comfortable and fun to wear but, alas, usually the pieces are not found together anymore.  BUT, THIS TIME I did!

In a lovely coral pink that I also love, couldn’t be better.  Thanks for sharing my fun!

NEW FIND!! TRUE VINTAGE 1960’S MINI CULOTTES BY BOBBIE BROOKS

The Bobbie Brooks company has been a fabulous maker of classic sportswear for many decades and their true vintage items are very special – well-designed and made to a high standard.  I always do a flip when I find one!

This “skort” is summer-perfect – dressier than shorts, easier than a mini-skirt (no ugly and ungainly exposures and attempts to avoid them), cool and FUN.  100% cotton!!

I love and discover all types and makes of true vintage fashion, but a high-quality brand name is always an extra plus.

MOD FLOWER-POWER 1960’S 2-PC. DRESS – “NEW” TO ME TODAY!

Too cute to pass up – I couldn’t believe a knit dress from the  mid – Sixties in such perfect condition.  it’s a real blast from the past.  Pictured here on size 4 Giselle, it’s a vintage size 8 with no room to spare!

Cut for the more conservative set – no mini-skirt here.  But, that’s how fashion always goes – everybody has to follow the trends one way or another.  Such a thrill to find a style that’s been made over so many times in the last decade in it’s original form – back when it was really hot on the streets everywhere.  I can almost see the fashionable housewife who wore it . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1960’s HAYMAKER BLAZER – PREPPY GOES LEISURE

Yes, even the elegant Haymaker label which used to make better-quality sportswear in the Fifties got into the boxy leisure-suit styling by the mid-Sixties.  This one’s a tiny size 10 (unbelievable!) and you can see that it’s still very well-made.

So, that’s why it is collectible – for the label and the company’s history.  Otherwise, it’s just a good example of fashion trends gone wrong and the slow demise of high-quality and elegant clothing construction which was beginning about the time this jacket was made.

Sigh.   However, that situation does make my adventures all the more fun . .. . . . . . . . . . . .

JUST FOUND – MORE WELL-MADE TRUE VINTAGE BLOUSES

It’s always a treat when these turn up – looks like 1960’s in both cases, but they’re a bit of a mystery.  The best thing about them is the quality and construction.  Of course, this type of photo doesn’t do them justice.

The blouse on the left is very casual and basic, but the fabric is really nice.  It’s some kind of a blend of cotton and rayon.  Feels smooth to touch and has a gloss, and I love the colors and the plaid, too.  Both have rounded wing collars, though the style on the right is much more sophisticated.

The blouse on the right is a star.  Not only is it made from a REALLY nice rayon fabric, but the tailoring is wonderful!  The buttons are all fabric-covered.  The retro-1940’s style is pretty with light shoulder padding and puffed sleeves.  What I like best is that it is FITTED!!!!!!!!!  Can’t believe it – it’s so rare to find a nicely fitted blouse or shirt because they just don’t make them now.  Spandex added to fabric molds to the body pretty well, but is a cheaper-looking alternative and can’t compare to a blouse with fitted seaming that is done properly.  The look is completely different, and much more elegant.

LOVE THIS RETRO FIFTIES FIND!

This beautiful silk calf-length skirt is almost a full -circle cut.  And, as usual, a perfect fit for me.  What I love best (aside from the fabric) is the atomic abstract art print on the black background.  So unusual and iconically late Fifties – early Sixties.  I’ll love wearing it with a cinch belt and art metal jewelry!

Although true vintage is ALWAYS THE BEST, I like it a lot when modern designers get it right when they feel a vintage vibe.  That happens once in a while and it’s always fun to find an example of that inspiration.

So, I was surprised and delighted again.  Hmmm . . . .stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

ANOTHER FABULOUS TRUE VINTAGE TREASURE – IN CLASSIC BLACK

So wonderful!!!  Another mid-century pencil skirt – as I’ve said, you can’t have too many. As usual, this one fits perfectly and has the expected tailoring details of a well-made garment.  Ignore the camera spots – it’s beautiful.

Love unraveling the stories of every find; this one was custom-tailored of a soft wool, with acetate liner in the seat.  Tailors used to do this with wool skirts to prevent stretching of the fabric from sitting.  I love the well-constructed waistband and side closure plus the fantastic fit.

Easy to dress up or down.  A basic black piece like this is always chic and when the quality is high plus a perfect fit, that’s what makes the difference between attractive and elegant – between fashionable and chic – between nice-looking and truly well-dressed.  Our grandmothers knew that, and most European women haven’t forgotten.

Would go nicely with the cocktail sweater I found and showed you a few days ago.  I plan to wear it with vintage jackets, blouses and sweaters.  I’ve discovered a trove of skirts lately – more to come . .. . . . . . . . . . . ..  . .. .

NEWLY-DISCOVERED MID-CENTURY BLOUSES LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!

At first, I thought that the green/brown blouse on top was a camouflage pattern – but it’s not.  It is a 1950’s art print fabric that is so fun!  It was commercially-made, with a care tag at the neckline.  I love cap sleeve blouses and yesterday’s finds were a real bonanza!

The two on the bottom are identical, excepting for the colors, and undoubtedly were custom-made by the same person, from interesting rayon or rayon-blend fabrics.  I’ve shown the back view on the right so that you can see the back buttoning and the interesting seaming.

Like so many mid-century garments, these are sporty and dressy at the same time.  I can wear them with shorts or Capri pants, like the ones I found last week, or with a skirt or under a suit jacket.  Always smart and elegant, no matter what the occasion.  That’s the beauty of true vintage fashion . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. ..
