TRUE VINTAGE MEN'S LONG-SLEEVED SHIRT FROM THE 1950'S

I absolutely love this shirt and others like it. Sorry I don’t have a male model. The distinguishing feature is the embroidery on the left side. These little designs are so much fun. Some are really creative!

Men sometimes wear long sleeves in the summer, so I consider this a year-round garment. Especially when it’s in a lighter color. It can be dressed up with a sport coat.

Some shirts of this type have multi-colored designs. Usually the fabric has a bit of sheen and the embroidery is glossy. You can tell by a quick look that it is a quality original item and not a modern imitation.

I LOVE to find them! Would have adored being a curator of wardrobe for Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer or Warner Bros. back in the day.

It’s even more fun to go to the closet and decide which movie to play in today . . …

TWO WONDERFUL MEN'S SHORT-SLEEVED SHIRTS - TRUE VINTAGE 1970'S & RETRO

I LOVE these shirts! Of course, I can’t wear them (WAY too big), but I couldn’t resist anyway. The photo doesn’t show you the details well, so I’ll describe. Let’s start with the true vintage shirt on the right.

This one was made in Hawaii in the 1960’s or ’70’s. Beautiful heavy 100% cotton fabric that is so characteristic of true vintage garments made there before about 1975. Since that time, the fabric usually isn’t so nice, nor the construction. My apologies to Hawaiian clothing-makers if there are exceptions.

The prints on these materials are also superb – nice designs and astounding colors. The label and the buttons used are also good clues as to the age of the shirt.

The shirt on the left is retro – probably 1980’s – but it is such a nice reproduction of a 1950’s to early 1960’s men’s shirt that I decided to…

AUSTRALIAN CONTACTS IN THE TRUE VINTAGE WORLD

AUSTRALIAN CONTACTS IN THE TRUE VINTAGE WORLD.

VINTAGE-HUNTING IN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit a street market and found a great 1960’s dress that I’ll show on the blog soon.  There were a few other treasures there – notably some beautiful old furs with unusual features.  I didn’t need to add them to my collection (and, space is an issue when traveling) but I’m always interested in looking at examples of old pieces.

After that, I was privileged to be guided around downtown Melbourne and noticed several vintage-clothing shops.  Didn’t have much time to stop, but I did run in to SHAG – one of the stores which is included in my book’s reference section, but  which I had not visited personally since it’s my first trip down under.

So much fun to look at what’s on their racks and to meet the salesperson, Leah, to get an update on the business.  They now have a website and on-line store, which will be added to their info in the book (a real advantage of using a digital format, rather than print).

I also discovered, sadly, that Anonymous Posh has closed.  Sounds like it had a good run, though!

Such fun to poke around or true vintage fashion down here – it is different in interesting ways, but also the same. . . . .

CLASSIC TRUE VINTAGE WESTERN-WEAR HAT

To wear at least three seasons of the year, a wool felt classic hat will last for decades and complete almost any sportswear outfit. This men’s cowboy style from the 1970s or before is uni-sex now.

The best quality hats of this type have a leather inside hatband. A liner (often satin) is another sign that it is of high quality. Look for the maker’s name stamped inside and, often, the name of the store where it was sold.

These will turn up in lots of places if you’re savvy about where to look.   You just never know . . . .
