SO UNUSUAL – 1960’S VELVETEEN MINI MATERNITY DRESS!

What a surprise to come across this custom-tailored frock.  It’s got many clues that told me of it’s age and how it came to be, but the styling was the real delight.  SO unusual to discover a maternity dress or a “tent dress” from the mid-1960’s.

Tent dresses were all the rage for a while during the Mad Mod Sixties.  Fortunately, the style didn’t hang around too long.  But, what could be more perfect as a maternity design?  This one is meant for fall and winter partying in heavy velveteen.  I have to say, it is cute on Stella.

After discovering a treasure like this, I wondered what could be next and it didn’t take long to find out.  Stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

FABULOUS UNUSUAL FIND! MID-1960’S VELVETEEN MATERNITY TENT DRESS

Wowee!  Someone custom-tailored this cute mini-dress that falls from above the bust-line and is a really flattering shape for someone whose waistline has temporarily disappeared.  It also could have been a “tent” style, which was all the rage about that time.  In any case, it’s perfect for Fall no matter how or why she wore it!

All kinds of “new” stuff, including a wonderful hairdo for Stella.  She’s psyched!  So am I.  We’ll be spreading a lot of rockabilly vibes and more.  Stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I CREATED A VERY COOL VINTAGE SKIRT

Look what I did to my dress!   You had seen this late 1960’s wool dress before, and I loved the red knit top of it, BUT,  the years had not been kind before it came to me and some moths had had a banquet.  Just couldn’t live with the little holes here and there, and no good way to fix them.

SO – why not snip it off at the waist and fashion a dirndl/pencil skirt instead?  So easy!  All I did was finish (by hand) around the waist with a piece of grosgrain ribbon, sew a few hooks and eyes in the placket left where the zipper used to be et voila’!  Just for extra fun, I threaded a black tie belt through the crochet so that it ties off in back.  Wouldn’t have had to, but it allows me to fit the waist a little more snugly and adds a cute touch.

Brainstorm!  Maybe I can wear it with that neat green sweater found recently – and black boots – must check it out . . . . .. … .. . . . . . . . . . .

CUTE LITTLE TRUE VINTAGE MINI – DRESS FROM THE LATE 1960’S

An iconic Mod flower-power print, with sheer sleeves at the same time!  The dress material is a loosely-woven stuff that they used to call “hop sacking” in the mid-Sixties (but, of course, not real hop sacking, which is a different thing – sort of like the sugar and flour bag material that women used to make shirts and dresses from on the farms WAY long ago).

It fits Stella in a way that’s too short and tight to look the way it is supposed to, and would do better on a model a little bit smaller and not quite so tall.  But, anyway, oh so cute and DEFINITELY from about 1966.  Notice the Peter Pan collar.

SUPER – FUN LATE SIXTIES DRESS FIND – FROM AUSTRALIA

IMG_1054IMG_1055 Here’s a better look at my street – market find.  When I saw the print and colors on this, I just HAD to have it!  When I touched the slinkiest of slinky nylon/poly/whatever fabric, I was over the moon!

Just a simple shirt style, with an elongated collar, but the open sleeves are a really fun touch.  It will be a very cool Spring statement dress – hard not to get noticed coming down the street in this.

And, so much fun to meet the daughter of the woman who had made it.  Getting family stories along with the great clothing is the best!

VERY NICE TRUE VINTAGE 1960’S BLOUSE FROM AUSTRALIA

IMG_1067 This is a beautifully-made piece from a smaller, upscale company from the ’50’s and ’60’s “down under” – Hibodress.  It’s been fun doing research on the vintage clothing labels that I encountered there.

The woman who started this business really appreciated smart design and quality construction.  It shows in this garment and made it such a pleasure to own and wear. Kudos to her!

That’s still true today, of course, if you can find clothing of that caliber . . . . .

A MID-CENTURY BLOUSE FROM THE AUSTRALIA TRIP – LOOKS LIKE SIXTIES TO ME

IMG_1071     Here’s a nice picture of that great rayon blouse that I found there.  Love the fitted shape, which is a rare find in itself.

I suppose that this shirt could go all the way back to the Forties.  Somewhere between 1940 and 1970, with my bets on the late Sixties.  As much as I love being able to pinpoint the age of my discoveries, there’s also some fun in the things that keep you guessing a bit.

Won’t this look GREAT with the jacket I showed yesterday?  A perfect combo!

TRUE VINTAGE LATE SIXTIES CRUSHED VELVET PARTY MINI- DRESS

Yes, it is really crushed!  Needs a trip to the cleaner or, maybe, a good steaming.  Doing this at home can be tricky, however, with true vintage garments.

Reminds me so much of photos I’ve seen from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s – a typical dress for the Homecoming dance.

Crushed velvet and panne’ velvet were really popular then, plus dresses with Victorian or Edwardian tailoring details. Funny how fashion really swings back and forth from modernistic to old-style, sometimes combining the two in one garment.

In this case, I love the long sleeves and vintage-style bodice with lacy trim at the neck and a mini-skirt combined. I see a lot of that in my investigating experiences – so interesting!

FUN 1960’S MEN’S ORLON SWEATER – A LAUNDRY REVOLUTION FOR MID-CENTURY WOMEN

The miracle fabric called Orlon – machine washable and dry-able at home!  Oh, my . . . . . .

Back when sweaters had to be dry-cleaned or hand-washed, this was a revelation for homemakers and a big time-saver.  However, I must say that even today they still haven’t gotten it just right – pilling remains an issue.  So, I don’t mind treating my vintage acrylics with special care.

This one is so “from that time” and it’s always fun to find a guy’s clothing item.  But, even though it’s a LARGE size, looks more like something for a medium-sized woman now. Maybe it will even fit me under the right styling conditions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

DISCOVERED – TRUE VINTAGE 1960’S FLOWER POWER MINI DRESS

A perfect example of a frock from the mid-Sixties – the fabric and tailoring details give it away.  It’s a larger size, meant to be belted, so may find it’s way to the tailor if I’m going to keep it.  We’ll see.

The material is beautiful to see and feel.  The dress is very well-made, so has remained in great condition over the years.  I’ll have to examine it a little more carefully later on, to see if a maker’s label is hidden somewhere, but I do know that it was Union-made so we’ll go from there.  Lots more finds to publish, so stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ..
