2 CLASSIC HATS, PROBABLY FROM THE 1960’S

2 CLASSIC HATS, PROBABLY FROM THE 1960'S

Classic warm hats for winter or winter/fall – true vintage fox fur a la’ Dr. Zivago and and a ’20’s-style wool felt cloche. It’s hard to date them exactly, but from the construction and labels I would say they were made in the 1960’s.

TRUE VINTAGE 1950’S WIGGLE DRESS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY

TRUE VINTAGE 1950S WIGGLE DRESS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY

Oooh!  Wish I had a party to go to – you can be sure I’d wear this.  By Jonathan Logan in cherry-color velveteen.  Deep V-neck front and back, back zip.  The straight sleeves have short zippers at the wrists – a surprise feature that I’ve rarely seen excepting on wedding dresses.

Looks good on Madge, huh?  You can be sure that there are no pockets! Nothing shows off the figure like a “50s wiggle dress or 1930s bias-cut gown.  Women wearing these look nothing but elegant because they are cut and made so well.  Let’s bring back the days of high-quality, elegant AND alluring clothing again (but till then, I’m thrilled to be the Magicvintagespy. ) And, you just never know . . . . .

Bored in Miami?   Snowbound in your photography studio?  How about livening things up with a little vintage cheesecake?

Look at those cups on this classic ’50’s Jantzen maillot!  If you didn’t have the figure, these suits would do their best to give it to you.

I’ll bet you can think of all sorts of ways to pose in this bubblegum pink cutie, and with all the necessary accessories.

Snowstorms –  That’s why your mother wanted you to learn how to play by yourself.

2 GREAT TRUE VINTAGE FASHION – STATEMENT HATS FROM THE 1960’S

2 GREAT TRUE VINTAGE FASHION - STATEMENT HATS FROM THE 1960'S

These are wonderful hats. Marlene, on the left, is wearing a lovely velour brimmed model with a wooden buckle decoration. It is, I believe, from Montreal.

Celia, on right, sports a velveteen style which Courreges made popular (I think he was the first one) in the mid – late 1960’s. It’s styled after the caps that Bobbies wear/wore in Britain and came from Peck & Peck in New York.

Think, also, Mary Quant and Twiggy for Celia’s hat. Very Mod. It was followed shortly (I think that’s the order they came in) by the Carnaby Street look – brimmed caps, neckties, hip-huggers, paisley patterns.

Lots of fun fashion finds from the Sixties . . . . . . . . . . .

A COLLECTION OF SMALL, VERY PRETTY TRUE VINTAGE HATS WITH VEILS AND DECORATION

A COLLECTION OF SMALL, VERY PRETTY TRUE VINTAGE HATS WITH VEILS AND DECORATION

This little group are from the 1950’s and 1940’s, in small styles that complement your clothing in a very striking way but don’t overpower. I love the small details! Little bits of feathers . . ….. .. . ..  Sorry that the color isn’t the best in the photograph.  They are black, mocha and dark brown.

Veils are always attractive and flirty. The beret styles have cute, eye-catching elements. The two together, black and white on the top right, are simple but very interesting because of this.

I’ll put one on when I want to add something special. They always get noticed.  Therefore, not during an investigation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE BLACK FELT BRIMMED LADIES’ HATS

TRUE VINTAGE BLACK FELT BRIMMED LADIES' HATS

Black felt hats are a staple in anyone’s vintage or modern wardrobe. Notice the unusual shapes and trim that distinguishes these from today’s styles. You’ll also notice a difference in the quality of the felt.  These examples, I believe, are from the 1940’s – probably my favorite era.

TWO FORTIES – FIFTIES HATS – OUT OF WINTER INTO SPRING

TWO FIFTIES HATS - OUT OF WINTER INTO SPRING

Cautiously still in shoulder season – sticking to classic tones and sizes – these can still be called Spring hats.  The very special one at left on Marlene would have accompanied a particular suit or frock.  Hats used to be so creative and capable, if carefully selected, of making a stunningly good impression!

The navy wool hat at right on Celia is the perfect one to wear with an early Spring coat in a coordinating tone.  It is simply a classic wardrobe staple and warming when the weather is cool.

Nothing picked up the spirits like a new hat. It seems that women loved them even more than new shoes!  Well, I can understand that, because around your face and shoulders the right hat can make you look absolutely beautiful . . . . . .

3 TRUE VINTAGE 1960’s MEN’S HATS – STETSON, FELT OR LEATHER

3 TRUE VINTAGE 1960's MEN'S HATS - STETSON, FELT OR LEATHER

While we’re acknowledging some accessories that were popular for mid-century, how about the ever-present men’s hat?  Men’s vintage clothing is not my specialty, but sometimes I can’t resist. These can look just as cute or smart on women as they look handsome on men.

I still love seeing a man in a hat and, if you watch old movies 1965 and back, men wore hats almost ALWAYS when they were away from home.  There were few exceptions to that rule. Men’s hat styles were almost as important as the trends in women’s frocks.

However, the design of classic accessories seems to morph more slowly than garment designs do and the style changes in men’s hats have been subtler over the decades, though still very important.  Most dress hats are still made of wool felt and will last forever if protected from moths and properly stored.  All it takes is a little brushing once in a while and making sure that it doesn’t get crushed.

This classic brimmed style can go with lots of things, from boho to casual to smart casual to elegant. Remind you of anyone? Come fly with me, come fly away . . . . . . . . . . . . .
