1950's PIN-UP SWIMSUIT FOR A VALENTINE'S DAY PHOTO

Bored in Miami?   Snowbound in your photography studio?  How about livening things up with a little vintage cheesecake?

Look at those cups on this classic ’50’s Jantzen maillot!  If you didn’t have the figure, these suits would do their best to give it to you.

I’ll bet you can think of all sorts of ways to pose in this bubblegum pink cutie, and with all the necessary accessories.

Snowstorms –  That’s why your mother wanted you to learn how to play by yourself.

Valentine’s Day –  That’s why it’s good to know how to play nice with others . . . . .

A LITTLE SWIMSUIT SERIES – TRUE VINTAGE CLASSIC BLACK MAILLOT

A LITTLE SWIMSUIT SERIES - TRUE VINTAGE CLASSIC BLACK MAILLOT

This one is so elegant and well-made that I can’t tell without getting it out and examining it again whether it’s from the 1940’s, 1950’s or early 1960’s.  That’s the way that all our wardrobe fundamentals should be!

Even looking at the photo, I believe that this suit comes from the earlier end of the time spectrum than the end of it.  It’s all in the fabric.

Next time I want to channel Esther Williams . . . . . . . . . . . . . ..

FABULOUS TRUE VINTAGE TANK BATHING SUIT – 1940’S – 1950’S

FABULOUS TRUE VINTAGE TANK BATHING SUIT - 1940'S - 1950'S

This suit has two layers.  The way they used to do the little briefs or shorts underneath was such a figure-enhancer for most women.

Almost like a tankini, but all in one piece.  Look at those great design details, too. You won’t see that on modern suits, nor the exceptional construction.  Black & white makes another appearance for Spring and Summer, as always.

Just right for sitting beside the pool, under a big sun-hat, with a Mai-Tai . . . . . . . . .

UNUSUAL FIND!!! YES, IT’S A TRUE VINTAGE STRAPLESS BULLET BRA

UNUSUAL FIND!!! YES, IT'S A TRUE VINTAGE STRAPLESS BULLET BRA

One of the most bizarre silhouettes in fashion was the “bullet bra”, which made women’s breasts look like torpedoes under their sweaters.  Quite unnatural-looking and strange, but it was definitely the thing for a while.

It’s hard to ID in this photo and it’s not right for Madge to model, but the surest way to recognize these brassieres is from the pointy shape of their cups.  Also, the construction of older bras is characteristic, too.   Maybe it will suit Stella better . .. . . .

1950’s and early 1960’s bras often have heavier elastic and lots of stitching on the cups, with a more definite shape, even if they aren’t of this particular style.  A “foundation garment” really was that – like building a brick house.

Thank goodness, now we prefer more subtly-tailored lingerie, physical strength and fitness to give us the body shape we prefer.  But, many ’50’s and early ’60’s garments require a firm girdle and bra underneath to support their characteristic lines – looks great and its FUN!!

A COLLECTION OF TRUE VINTAGE SLEEPWEAR & LOUNGEWEAR

A COLLECTION OF TRUE VINTAGE SLEEPWEAR & LOUNGEWEAR

It seems that in the past women, and men, made a real art of wearing at-home fashion. They didn’t bop around the house in sweats or nothing (nothing is lovely, but not very mysterious).

No, there were smoking jackets, bed jackets, peignoirs, robes, caftans, gowns, pajamas and many variations of each. I will show more in the future, but for now . . . . . .

Left to right: a quilted lounging or bed jacket from the 1950s or 1940s, a boys’ size 18 lounging jacket from the 1950s or 1960s (just right for a small woman, too), a babydoll gown and peignoir set from the 1960s or 1970s, and two 1950s bed jackets.

One should not neglect one’s fashion presence just because (maybe) no one else is around. Much more important if someone is.
I love finding these beautiful old high-quality items.  Everyone deserves the luxury.

There’s nothing like receiving casual guests in a smart caftan or reading in bed in a lovely gown with matching robe because if the doorbell rings . . . . . . . .well, you just never know . . . .. . . .

“WE WEAR SHORT-SHORTS!” TRUE VINTAGE BOBBIE BROOKS FROM THE 1950’s

I think that this was a line from a novelty song of the 1940’s or 1950’s. There are several of you who I know specialize in those decades. Can you help me out?

It’s 30 degrees Fahrenheit warmer (hotter!) today!! So, time for a contrast in clothing. More little cuties – these short shorts are from the mid-’50s, made by Bobbie Brooks. Remember the swimsuit I showed a few days ago with the metal zip in the center back? Well, these have the same feature (notice in this back view). You can see a hanging loop peeking out, too. Such attention to detail, even in a simple everyday garment!

They also have a high waist which, in my opinion, is much more flattering than the super-low-rise stuff that’s been on the market for several years. Gingham checks have been popular for decades and were really big in the ’40’s, ’50’s, and early ’60’s. I really like the blue edging around the waistline, too.

Back then, they made lots of really cute play-suits and play-clothes of all kinds. And, they were really nicely tailored in good quality fabrics, often with super-fun prints. Vintage clothing always makes me smile! Can’t get too much of that . . . . . . . . .
