IT'S ALL ABOUT THE LACE . . . . . . . . . . ..

These are perhaps the only black slips I’ll show, for now, even though I have lots of them. The details don’t photograph well, but in this case you can see the gorgeous lace on the hems and bodices.

This lace is unusual and the two black slips are somewhat longish – 1940’s or early 1950’s. They’re almost little dresses themselves.

Each of my slips has a unique decoration of some kind – even the plain ones that I probably won’t be photographing have some interesting features or an unusual color.

Fun to wear with your beautiful true vintage dresses or even if you have to wear boring clothes . . . . . . . . . . . .

THE FIRST PHOTO OF MY “BEST” TRUE VINTAGE LINGERIE SLIPS – THE MOST BEAUTIFUL UNDERTHINGS!

This begins the main showing of my beautiful slip collection. They will be grouped, generally, by color. Overall, they’ll range from 1920’s – 1960’s with most from the ’40’s and ’50’s. We’ll start off with some golds and bronzes.

Materials will be silk, acetate, rayon and nylon – most will be of nylon. The trims are lace and netting, sheer nylon, embroidery, ribbons and applique’ – I think that covers it.

Most times the body of the slips and the decoration are of the same hue, but in many fine pieces – as shown here – the decoration is done in a contrasting color. They’re almost too pretty to cover up!

Isn’t it luscious to know that while you’re all bundled up in your wools and corduroys, jackets and sweaters and coats that underneath it all . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

TRUE VINTAGE NAME BRANDS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

This pretty Seventies sweater is made by Banff – a company that has made high-quality knit clothing for women for several decades.  Sweaters, suits, jackets, ponchos, etc.   I picked this up very recently, mostly on the strength of the brand name (and, it’s awfully cute, too . . . . . .. )

I can never resist (nor do I want to!) beautiful lingerie from the Fifties and Sixties,  especially when the brand name is not one I see frequently.  This lovely half-slip was made by Dorsay.  The nylon has a wonderful feel and quality, and the applique’ embroidery is gorgeous.

Last, but not least, is a 1960’s bed jacket by Shadowline.  Their mid-priced lingerie and sleepwear is never over-the-top, but their designs are attractive and I can always count on the quality.  Worth it, every time.

RARE MID-CENTURY FEMININE COTTON LINGERIE FULL SLIP

IMG_1692Remember I said I’d show this one a bit later – very different from it’s fancier nylon cousins.  I’m always thrilled to discover a true vintage one, because they aren’t common.  Absolutely the best  for wearing with summer dresses (or even as a nightgown).  Some people wear them as dresses alone.

No one wants to smother in a nylon slip on hot days, no matter how gorgeous it is!  But, many vintage and some modern dresses really need an undergarment like that in order to look their best.  Smooth cotton will enhance the fit just as well as nylon or rayon, while being wonderfully comfortable.

This piece is short, too, compared to most of the slips of that era so that’s a plus. So pretty!  I love the innocent style of the lace and embroidery decorations.  So, even though it’s out of season here in North America, it’s another sleuthing success . . . . . . . . . .

HUGE FIND OF GORGEOUS TRUE VINTAGE LINGERIE!!!

IMG_1700Just the other day, I discovered about half a dozen of these beautiful lingerie slips from the 1950’s or late 1940’s.  I already had two or three others similar to the one on the left, but it has been several years since I found them. Those like the perfect, classic beauty on the right are a bit more common but still are tricky to find.

Do take a close-up view of the lace and trims on these stunners.  They are just so lovely.  And, of course, the heavy nylon is wonderful to touch.  The longer length of Fifties slips is great for wearing with dresses from that same era but they’re also fabulous worn as nightgowns or slip-dresses.

LATEST DISCOVERY – TRUE VINTAGE LADIES FULL LINGERIE SLIP BY VAN RAALTE IN AQUA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMy collection of true vintage clothing contains lots of gorgeous lingerie pieces, but there’s always room for another one like this! Van Raalte was one of the best brands and it’s no wonder that I fell in love with this one at first touch. You know how much I value that fabulous heavy nylon that was used in the best lingerie from the 1950’s.

This slip is in an extra-small size, so I’ll save it especially for wearing under dresses that require a smooth, sleek line like some from the 1930’s and 1940’s. A beautiful undergarment like this is perfect for achieving that look, while keeping your outfit just as gorgeous underneath as it is on the outside. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1950’S/EARLY 1960’S DRESSY BLOUSE & THE PERFECT SWEATER-GIRL SLIP FOR MARILYN

This blouse is a good example of dressy styles that were popular right around the time of the Kennedy era. It’s a large size and, without a model, it’s hard to get the best pictures of each of these, but I’m sure that your discerning eyes can pick out the important details.

The blouse is made in two layers – one more opaque covers the torso and an illusion layer floats on top and creates the sheer sleeves. They are my favorite feature of this garment – it’s otherwise too fussy for me, but this kind of blouse was very much in vogue with average women.

The hem is finished with a band, intended to wear untucked over dressy slacks or a long skirt. As with many blouses made then, it buttons up the back and has a fold-over collar. The ruffle in front is just feminine decoration. . . . .

NOW FOR THE SLIP – this is an OLD one that I couldn’t resist. The fabric is heavy rayon-type and it has very interesting seaming. Of course, the hardware is made of metal. It’s an everyday piece of lingerie, without much decoration. This feature is one of it’s best – makes it perfect to wear under this blouse because there’s no issue of trimmings showing through.

Although it’s so practical in this way, this slip is really the perfect undergarment for a sweater-girl. You can see in the photo that the bodice is sewn as cups that are seamed to a point. Just right to wear over your bullet-bra! It’s also seamed front and back to fit very closely to the waist and hips. No unsightly folds or creases under your cashmere.

IMG_1538 IMG_1539Just found this lovely lingerie, and it was worth picking up because of the high quality and special features.  Both have the same RN number.  Maybe they weren’t sold at the same time, but let’s assume that they were sold in the same store, and not from the catalog.

Now we’ll go through the thinking process of a mid-century housewife making her decision to buy . . . . . .

Hmm . . . I really like this extra panel in the front that makes sure there will be no see-through.  They both have that.   Love the embroidery on the bodice – so feminine – – – both have that, too.   Beige vs. white – hmm . . . . they’re both good, though the beige one seems a little more invisible, and it’s a nicer quality – just prettier somehow.  The lace is a bit finer, and the fabric feels better but,     wait,      Oh.  The white one is a Doesn’t Slip so no wonder it feels different.   Hmm . . . . I don’t like it as well, but I guess that’s progress – it might be more comfortable and look better sometimes.  Maybe I should get the white one, but, it’s just a little longer than the other and might show under that blue dress that I wear so much. Don’t want to fuss with trying to shorten it.  Well, I guess I should buy them both. They’ll certainly work well for me and everybody needs several all the time.  Not overpriced.  But, I wonder what Harry will say – – Oh, well . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Just another household dilemma mastered by one of our grandmothers.

A SAUCY LITTLE FIFTIES DRESS (AND THE LINGERIE SLIP I WEAR!)

I just love this dress, with the big bow and button in front. The colors are so sunny and really stand out!

It’s made of a heavy cotton that doesn’t show through, but I like to wear a comfy nylon slip under and this lovely orange one from the 1950’s just fills the bill. I really like wearing lingerie that matches my outfit and the fifties were famous for their bright undergarment colors (especially in slips).

With a fabric-covered belt it fits nicely and looks cute as well as lady-like. Just depends on which way you want to go . . . . . . . . . . . .
