WEIRD ATOMIC TRUE VINTAGE BLOUSE – BIZARRE LATE ’40’S KNIT TOP

IMG_1610What a strange combination of styles and themes this find is!  Kind of reflects the times right after WWII, when the world was reeling and trying to set a new course.

Here we have stylish 3/4 sleeves, a fussy, ruffled keyhole neckline with a little bow tie and even some traditional tartan plaid  on – – lightening bolts and big “O’s” that look like what?  Gun barrels or smoke rings?  And, the colors of fire, ash and annihilation white.  Whoa!  Somebody was having a big atomic moment when they designed this fabric.  Putting it on a prissy blouse was another weird move.

If you don’t think about all this, it is a fun and striking garment.

Anyway, the world had changed big-time and this is what happens.  Fashions always reflect historical events in one way or another.  It’s intriguing to tease out these clues and solve another mystery . . . . . .

True Vintage Belted Day-Dress from the late !940's for Fall

Another of my favorites. It took me a little while to fall in love with this one, but I did.   Some of the buttons and the belt needed replacing, but fortunately I had in my collection some fun copper-colored ones that matched!  They spark up the overall gray color of the fabric and add interest.

Actually, the fabric isn’t gray.  It’s maybe the tiniest black & white check known to mankind.  Had to get out my magnifying glass to examine the fabric closely. The weave is very interesting and looks like a cross between a stripe and a houndstooth check, in a beautiful rayon (?) with a wonderful drape – So luscious that it makes me wish I were a fabric expert to understand it better.  In warm lighting, it gives a kind of nut-brown effect that seems just right for going into Fall.

As usual, there’s a metal…

A TRUE VINTAGE EMBROIDERED RAYON BLOUSE FROM THE 1940'S

This is a rare blouse, in a silky rayon fabric.  If it weren’t for being a war-time garment, I might think it was a silk/rayon blend but, since the war effort used silk for other purposes, it was rare to find it in any clothing (or hosiery!).  Rayon was King, and it’s a fabulous fabric.  I just LOVE 1940’s and ’50’s blouses!

This one I’ve had for a while. It is finished at the hem to be worn un-tucked. Rather big for me, so I wear it as a tunic style.  About 2 sizes smaller, it would be beautiful under yesterday’s suit, no?  Great design over a skirt, however, and dynamite with slacks.

The beautiful coffee-colored embroidery is what also “makes” it.  Mocha-colored items are a bit unusual, and a nice color to take into the Autumn.  Neutrals are just about the most elegant, and versatile, of all hues.

It’s…
