NEW FINDS! TRUE VINTAGE 1950’S – EARLY 1960’S EVENING GLAM

IMG_1498 IMG_1494These two belong together!  Both the dress and stole are from the same era.  Faux mink by Glenoit and a custom-tailored cocktail dress with illusion neckline.

Bodice treatment of this type is so pretty – I’ve got examples from the 1940”s to early 1960’s.  Although the dress is of modest quality, these kinds of necklines are not easy to make (no, I’ve never tried it – I can tell!)  It’s obvious that the sewer knew what they were doing.

The fur is well-made and subtly dyed, with a brocaded lining.  It has stood up to wear and time extremely well over 50 – 60 years.

. . . . . more examples of hand-tailored elegance that even the budget-minded woman could enjoy back in the day . . . . . . . ..

TRUE VINTAGE SHEER SHIRT-DRESS FOR SPRING FROM THE 1950s

In the 1950s, this style of shirt-dress in a very sheer printed material was popular. I have found several of them here and there. Usually they were belted and, of course, would be worn over a slip. Imagine this one with a lovely true vintage nylon slip underneath (but not a fussy slip). and a covered buckle belt or tie belt. . . . . . . . . . .your skirt swaying in the breeze as you walk down main street on your shopping errands for the day. A pretty little ’50s bag and peep-toe slingbacks might be nice. Or, you can mix it up. I love a full-on vintage look, especially with dresses, but mixing decades is also fun. Vintage accessories with modern clothing really works for me sometimes. I find the mixing easy with casual looks. The great thing about many true vintage items is that their…

TRUE VINTAGE 1950'S - EARLY 1960'S SUNDRESSES

Here we have two beautiful sundresses, in similar colors. Not really my colors – I’m a Summer skin-tone, rather than Spring or Fall, but who’s going to quibble when faced with these!

The one on the right has more detail on the bodice and even has bows fixed to the shoulder straps in back. It has a covered belt, whereas the other dress just has piping at the waist.

They’re both lovely, in a beautiful cotton. Madge wears it very well, don’t you think? Such exceptional fit and tailoring.

Either of them could go from simple daytime activities to work (probably with a sweater or jacket), dinner, dancing, a party or date.

I often see dresses like this in movies from that era. Wear them and step into a time warp . . . . . . . . . .

A SPECIAL HOLIDAY HAT – HAPPY EASTER!

Celia loves this one – it’s a little demure/dressy accessory that takes its mood from the occasion, the ensemble and the wearer. LOVE feather hats and veils . . . . . . . . . .

Back in the Fifties or early Sixties, a hat like this was not off the radar, but it was a statement. Every woman adored hats and looked for just the right ones to accent her dresses, suits and stunning good looks.

Another of my favorites . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . .

IMG_1472Here’s slender size 2 Stella in a vintage size 12 suit (and there’s only a little extra room!)  What a pretty style in floral print, with a halter-tie, criss-cross neckline and figure-flattering (for some) skirt.

Of course, it has built-in bra cups and an elasticized back, waist and leg openings.  Naturally, a back metal zipper, too.

True vintage labels are often so quaint – this one reads: ” Catalina – part of the art of Eve. ”   THAT’S a rather heavy thought to consider . . . . . .

OUR GRANDMOTHERS AND THEIR MOMS AND GRANDMAS KNITTED SWEATERS ALL YEAR LONG!!

IMG_1461 It’s hard to imagine, but

IMG_1462mid-century and before women wore sweaters of one kind or another all year.  These McCall’s needlework magazine pictures from the 1950’s and early 1960’s prove it!  Not only dresses, cardigans and little boleros, but I’ve seen patterns for shorts and even bathing suits.

If you keep a woman confined with time on her hands, it’s amazing what she will come up with . . . . . . . .
