FOUND YESTERDAY – CUTEST EVER 1950’S CLUTCH HANDBAG

IMG_3559

It was just a vinyl bargain bag at the time, but oh-so-sweet novelty for carrying with summer dresses.  This one may have come from the “five and dime”, but some girl loved it and it held up well over the years.  Plain zipper opening on top with a bit of bead chain to hold a key.  I’m off to the carnival!

DISCOVERY! SUMMER WHITE MID-CENTURY HANDBAGS

img_3270.jpg

Beaded and beautiful – one even had a pretty hankie tucked inside!  (also found some old pennies)  Vintage 1950’s – 1960’s, made in Hong Kong (of course!), made in U.S.A., too.  All so clean and well-loved.

The beading is hand-done.  The 1930’s – style on the bottom right has the brand name stamped onto the satin lining.  The purse made in Hong Kong (bottom left) has, naturally, a silk lining.  The larger handbag on top has fun plastic beads crocheted into raffia and Lucite trim.  Big enough to hold all your daily needs.

I’m always so impressed by how well mid-century women cared for their clothing and accessories.  Yes, it was sometimes an issue of economy – if you can only afford to have one “good” dress, preserving it becomes very important.  However, way beyond that was a personal value placed on items of quality that were lovely to look at and wear and the wish to treat them with respect.  I try to fill my closets with garments and their complements that inspire the same sentiment.

So, no careless coffee spills, scattered crumbs or dogs in my lap with these . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

ANOTHER FIND! A PERFECT PRINCESS GARDNER SET FROM THE FIFTIES

IMG_2694

So beautiful and elegant – leather handbag accessories, made with quality construction and lovely design.  And, so convenient!

A wallet with coin purse attached is so useful – I carry one whenever I can.  A matching key-case is a very chic accompaniment.  This pretty gold-embossed set is too good-looking to hide, but when you pull one out of a an equally-gorgeous true vintage handbag – what could be better?

Though no longer in the original box, these pieces look as though they were never used. It’s been a while since I ran across one of these but, you just never know . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

JUST FOUND – 1960’s DRESSY PETIT POINT TAPESTRY-LOOK HANDBAG

IMG_2545Popular in the 1950’s and early 1960’s, this one looks like it’s never been carried!  I love these pretty dressy purses that add an elegant touch to evening or better day dresses. They used to be a staple of city-wear for well-dressed women . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ..

CLASSIC GARAY EVENING CLUTCH FROM THE 1950’S

So many clutch purses are made today in vintage styles, but there’s nothing like the quality and attention to detail found in true vintage examples.  I’ll ALWAYS go for those instead!  I love rigid handles that can be folded inside the purse to hide and beautiful satin fabric covering is always elegant and versatile.  Two compartments inside with a see-through vinyl divider is so practical, too.

This Garay handbag is elegant and probably never carried.  There is a bit of storage wear, but the inside is absolutely perfect.  Sigh – another happy escapade!

A SPECIAL 1950’S BEADED BAG

img_2032

I have lots of mid-century beaded bags but this one’s a bit older and I especially like the shape of it, soooooo . . . . . . . . . . . .

of course I had to pick it up.  This iridescent beige/gold color is so versatile to go with anything and everything.  So pretty – it makes me think of Grace Kelly.

Perfectly clean inside and with beads intact, what could be better? .. . . . . . . .

ELEGANT TRUE VINTAGE MID-CENTURY LEATHER CLUTCH PURSE

ELEGANT TRUE VINTAGE 1950S/'60S LEATHER CLUTCH FOR THE VALENTINE'S DAY BASH

Accessories are EVERYTHING to an ensemble, so what to carry on an impromptu dressy occasion?   A true vintage bag, of course. This one doesn’t steal the show but demonstrates your exquisite taste and knowledge of quality.  I have many dressy bags, but this one is often my go-to choice.

It’s of gold leather and is lined in black rayon. The inside pocket, of course, contains its own little make-up mirror for touching up your lipstick throughout the night. No self-respecting true vintage handbag would come without one. If you’re a really successful sleuth, it will still be in it’s original little paper envelope.

The accessories that you carry or wear (this includes shoes) raise or lower the impression of your entire outfit. Genuine leather is always a preferred material, and quality construction.  Remember the phrase “well-heeled” to describe a person who is well-dressed and tasteful, referring especially to their choice of footwear?  That’s what it means!

It’s not the point to look for something expensive or flashy (better NOT flashy) if you are successful in the hunt for true vintage fashion.  It’s so much fun to spot that perfect bag hiding and waiting . . . . . you just never know . . . . . . . . . .

ANOTHER RARE DISCOVERY – ICONIC 1950’S ETRA LEATHER CLUTCH PURSE

IMG_1690IMG_1715I’m saying “rare find” a lot lately!  This purse is a keeper – a flat and tidy leather clutch that hinges open in the most convenient way.  This was one of Etra’s best everyday designs from the Fifties.

I’ve found only one before, in a rather boring beige color.  So, I like this rich charcoal much better.  And, of course, a fine leather handbag is always preferred to vinyl or fabric for durability.

The only thing missing is the chain handle which attaches inside and folds away if you don’t want to use it.  That is easy to replace.  A little polish to the metal frame and it’s golden!

So much fun . . . . . . .

BLACK & WHITE AND RED ALL OVER? NO, IT’S NOT A TRUE VINTAGE NEWSPAPER . . . . . . . . .

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACan I ever have too many mid-century clutch purses? No, not when they’re like this one! Carrying on the black and white theme that I’ve had going for a couple of weeks, this little bag is another lovely example of a clutch purse that was inexpensive in it’s time but is loaded with elegant design and fashion artistry. And, can be carried with almost any outfit.

Again, here’s a stylish treatment of the frame – but my favorite feature is the red lining! I never pass up a handbag with a beautiful liner and have several in red. They may be leather, silk, cotton or rayon as in this case, but will always give me a smile and a feeling of sophistication each time I open them up. I’m sure those 1940’s – 1960’s ladies felt the same.

Someone loved this little bag well, and used it lightly. The condition is wonderful with no stains inside or damage to the black patent outside. Thanks, Mary Lou – Peggy Sue – whoever you were .. . . . . . . . .. . . . . .
