This is a very special dress – the one that the actress playing the “vixen” would wear in a 1950’s movie. Or, the devil with the red dress on. . . . . . . . .

Taffeta seems to be one of the favorite “special dress” fabrics from the ’50’s. I also love boat necks and 3/4 sleeves. Fire engine red always makes a statement. It’s not a debutante party frock – about 100 miles from the little white one I just posted!

I would really like to know the history of this one. Based on where I discovered it, I suspect that it was worn by a small-time bad girl or a wannabe.

One of those “in your dreams” dresses. It’s always good to have at least a few of those handy because, you just never know . . . . . . . . . . …

ImageThis dress is one of my Mata Hari outfits and  came from a shop in, probably, British Hong Kong – maybe Taiwan or somewhere in China.  It has a label with the shop’s name, but no further info.  It is possibly custom-made, as so many of the dressmakers will do in those countries.

Because it is a classic oriental style and a heavy jacquard material, I am unable to date it really closely – also has none of the identifiers that clothing made in the U.S. often will.

In any case, I love Eastern styles and the beautiful silks that they are often made from.  The older dresses are still found.  Some, like this one, are made from a synthetic blend.  Many contemporary dresses are still being made in the traditional styles, so you have to know how to identify the older ones, if that is what you are seeking.  Kimonos…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     This is such a beautiful dress, in a slinky, sheer fabric that hugs the body.  With puffed sleeves and a LONG front streamer that crosses under the bosom to tie in front or back.

It’s cut on the bias, with panels inserted in the lower part of the skirt to make it swirl at mid-calf length.  There is also a dark blue slip-dress to wear underneath.

There is no label, and after careful examination I would say that this frock was made in the 1980’s or 1990’s, maybe by a small designer.  The construction is very professional.  At first, I had wondered if it was truly from the 1930’s, but I doubt it.

Such a beautiful mystery!  It bears further investigation.  The real joy is that it fits me so well . . . . .
