TRUE VINTAGE 1960’S SHIRTWAIST DRESS BY HENRY-LEE

IMG_1676

Made by the well-know vintage dressmaking company Henry Lee, it is a working-girl version of the classic shirtwaist dress which has looked just about the same since 1945.

A specialized treatment at the neck and faceted buttons elevate the style to a level above the standard house dress of 1962, but it’s still the same eternal design.  Dresses by Henry Lee were always carefully designed and well-made; one of those stand-by labels that women could always depend on.

Looks, to me, like a perfect back-to-school frock for a Sixties elementary school teacher or a secretary, the way they dressed back then.  It’s a little bit big for both Stella and me, so will probably find its way to eBay at some point, but I never resist taking rides Back to the Future . .. . . . . . .

Not only is the compelling legacy of Eva Peron presented beautifully in this historic mansion where she once established a home for immigrant women needing assistance, but a large collection of her clothing, shoes, hats, handbags and other accessories are displayed often along with pictures of when and where she wore the outfit.  All are well catalogued.

She was a remarkable woman and it’s clear why she was so beloved by so many.  If you have the opportunity to visit this museum, I highly recommend it.

TROLLING FOR TRUE VINTAGE FASHION IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF EVA PERON

So, here I go again tantalizing you with tales of remarkable discoveries.  Yesterday, Christmas Eve, found me scouting through a huge flea market in San Telmo barrio of Buenos Aires, de Argentina.  Like the one in Montevideo, so many luxury relics of wealthy families of the past.  Although the majority in this one is “hippie” style goods, leather, modern fur and artwork, the small selection of early mid-century treasures is excellent.

I bought, after regretfully acknowledging that I couldn’t buy everything I found, 3 handmade dresses from the 1940’s.  Such fun!  I’m sure that Evita would have approved.

Although it will be some time before Madge, Stella and Giselle can model them properly, I will attempt to photograph them all by mid-January.  Until then, we’re still watching finds from November.  Stay tuned  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
