WONDERFUL 1960’S HOME-SEWN COTTON BLOUSE

When I spotted this one I immediately fell in love with the cotton material. Look at this wonderful print! Aqua, teal and honey brown with touches of black and white. The fabric is SO soft – as many cotton shirts and PJ’s of the 50’s and early 60’s were. As the years went by they became better and better. First impression was that it would be too big on me, but might be comfy to lounge around the house in.

Surprise! When I got it home and was able to try it on, it fits like a dream. Custom-tailored for a small person, I’ll bet that this was made as a maternity blouse. It’s not baggy or frumpy and has a really nice fit on a slim person, but would have room underneath for a basketball. Clothing for women who were “expecting” in the mid-century was not as widely available as it is today and usually was pretty unflattering. No wonder that many women chose to make their own.

The workmanship is admirable. The hem and armhole facings are beautifully finished. I’ll enjoy this garment forever. It’s always so much fun to be constantly amazed by the simplest piece when I have the opportunity to look at and feel it carefully.

Although my next find is absolutely wonderful, this true vintage garment had to come first, since that’s what I’m all about. The next one, a dress, must take second place but is worth the wait. Stay tuned . . . . .

STILL STUCK IN THE EIGHTIES IN HAWAII – NOT A BAD PLACE TO BE!

STILL STUCK IN THE EIGHTIES IN HAWAII – NOT A BAD PLACE TO BE!

Here’s a favorite dress of mine that I haven’t shown before because, as a lover of real-deal classic clothing, it’s hard for me to think of something made in the 1980’s as true vintage. But, this piece is by Hilo Hattie and has a design feature which is reminiscent of the 1940’s and 1950’s. Though you can’t see it in this picture, there is a triangular panel that folds across in front of the hips and ties on the left.. This gives the dress an added fit advantage. Back in the day, tricks of style were done like this often and made dresses uniquely attractive.

Otherwise, the cut is a straight shift that pulls on over the head. Very easy to wear, cool and bright, so still collectible.

MY BEAUTIFUL HAWAIIAN SHEATH DRESS BY YOUNG HAWAII

MY BEAUTIFUL HAWAIIAN SHEATH DRESS BY YOUNG HAWAII

So happy to finally put this beauty on Stella. Although it’s not a really old classic, this dress is well-done in the classic way with piping around the neckline and armholes, high quality rayon fabric and an authentic-looking vintage print. Dresses of the 1980’s vintage were still sometimes constructed very nicely.

This is the time of year when an island vacation starts to sound really good, in spite of the Christmas fever. I know I’m eager to head down to the tropics and tomorrow will show you another 1980’s frock to include in the suitcase. Stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . .

ANOTHER TAILORED BLACK DRESS FROM THE ’60’S? NO!!! IT’S ’70’S ALL THE WAY . . . . . . . . . . . .

ANOTHER TAILORED BLACK DRESS FROM THE ’60’S? NO!!! IT’S ’70’S ALL THE WAY . . . . . . . . . . . .

Though just as elegant and nicely-made, it’s a LONG tunic by Butte Knits. Heavy acrylic (probably), which was so popular in the early ’70’s for well-made pant suits. Just perfect over tailored pants or leggings (or a straight skirt).

Another classic garment that will span decades of wear without losing it’s fashion mojo. Tomorrow we’ll jump to the 1980’s.

SEVENTIES STRIPED SUMMER SUNDRESS

This breezy little frock is probably from the early 1970’s, even though it’s not a mini-length. Hems were also looking back to midi-length at that time and there was a brief 1940’s retro fad happening. It’s a bargain store construction, but does have a white liner sewn in so going bra-less could work out.

I picked it up because it’s pretty and summery but also shows the fashion variety that was going on. Although we tend to identify different decades with certain fashion styles, there always seems to be a departure or two from that which doesn’t get as much publicity. Tomorrow we’ll see something that is DEFINITLY early – mid 1970’s. Stay tuned . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
